1DC: Warning for potential Canon buyers form a previous C100/1DC/XC10/5D/7D owner

The Canon 1Dc was the first of its kind with internal 4k recording. It might not feel like it was long ago, but there really was nothing like it back then.

At launch there was talk of the 1Dc getting additional cooling over the normal 1Dx. Wether that was the case or not, no doubt Canon was red lining the camera to get to 4k. That's not to say they pushed it too far. Canon is pretty conservative and, in my opinion, very serious about image quality. ButI think it's fair to say the 1Dc operates at the top of its performance envelope.

The new 1Dx mkII has a new sensor and new processors. While internal 4k still puts a strain on any camera (we've seen recent Sonys shut down due to heat). Canon has gone on record saying that the camera can records for as long there is media (or that 29min limit).

I've also had it confirmed by Brent Ramsey (the guy from Canon doing Canon's recent official introduction and feature videos on YouTube) that the read out of the sensor is twice as fast as the 1Dc. This should help with many things, including rolling shutter.

I don't think the mkII will break nearly as much sweat—if any—recording 4k. I have no hesitation about this camera, personally.

And I have often dropped lenses, converters and cameras.
WOW, In close to twenty years of shooting, I've never dropped a single lens or camera EVER! Note to self: Never loan a camera or lens to Indiawilds, lol

Well often was not the right choice of word. However things happen. Once my assistant stumbled and fell and rolled down hill. The 70-200 IS II and the 2xII TC flew from his hands. Fortunately both survived. Given a chance, I would rather want the guy to be saved rather than the equipment. Tough situations. Now I choose my assistants carefully for the projects. Still things happen. In 2013 I was in the mountains in Uttarakhand in India when the first landslides started. I had a premonition that something real bad is going to happen. I just called off the project and came back from Kedarnath and within three days everything got wiped out. The Govt. says 10k people died. I feel some 100k would have died.

I have had bags (lowepro, kinesis etc) burst out from the seams and things falling off. One bag just rolled down when one fellow just put it down and excitedly started pointing at a leopard. We had to scramble and catch hold of the bag. Now I move with a very small trusted team with carefully selected equipment. Over the time I have been able to train my team better so they don't panic infront of wild animals. Still we have had our share of misjudgments. For eg. my partner climbed down a bamboo bridge in a mangrove swamp forest to place a hydrophone some distance away. Despite being light weight, after moving a few steps she got stuck in the swamp and had to be rescued. It was scary as well as hilarious.

PS: All these have happened over the years and not just every day. :D
