Well, Scarlet and Epic will be Digital Stills and Motion Capture all in RAW. But it's just goping to be another announcement on the 30th, and from the tea leaves from last month's announcement, the Epics will be released first (and in a beta program available only to current Red One owners) and then the Scarlets. Also they said that prices would be slightly higher than predicted.

So even best case scenario, you can get a fixed lens Scarlet with a 2/3" chip for around $4000, but still need some support package for another $1-2k, in 6 months.

Or just get a DSLR now... I know which road I chose.

Scarlet and Epic will be sort of DSLRs -- they probably won't be SLRs (single lens reflex with an optical viewfinder and a mirror) but they will be DSMC's, digital still & motion cameras.

But there is, so far, no indication that they'd be doing anything lower-end than the Scarlet, if that's what you're really asking.

It seems that if Red were to cough up a true vDSLR killer, it would need to be a bit smaller than a breadbox.

that is what i needed to hear... i thought there was going to be a cheaper version of a RED cam than the scarlet... thanks for clearing this up... time to go 7d!!!

I think the DSLRs really appeared around the time Red was making their last big announcement, and really caught them off guard. I bet they thought that they were going to be the DSLR revolution.

That's also why I think when we hear the revised Scarlet announcement, it just seems like they will go upmarket. There's no way they'd want to get into a race for the bottom, against the likes of a Pentax K-X at $650. So I predict that they'll offer better-than-DSLR performance at higher-than-DSLR prices. I bet a kitted-out 2/3" 3K system, minimum reasonable shooting configuration, will be $5,000. Which will put the one I want at probably $10,000.

But, we only have about 3 weeks to wait for the next announcement.

yeah and now the only thing standing in my way of getting a 7d is the other dslr cameras that are offering 24fps... i love that the 7d has 60fps but the K-x at $650 is so appealing to poor film student me... i hear nikon has a few options coming out too with 24fps

Whew $10k is a far reach for me. If I had $10,000 I'd buy equipment for my HDSLR, gather some crew and actors, put a big chunk of $ on screen, and leave some left over for exhibition & promotion in the festivals. Then if that got a buzz but no distributor went for it I'd just go VOD and hope to be able to make enough for round 2. Now if I just got the $10k RED I would just have a camera and none of the above. Some day I hope to make enough where I can just grab a $10k camera but for now I would just put it into action and shoot for the stars.

Hi Barry: Any thoughts or guesses about how Red might address the issue of the cam's OLPF being tuned for video vs. digital stills? Have they said anything about this? Maybe they'll let you swing the OLPF in & out kinda like a CC filter on an "old" broadcast cam? Or maybe it'll be part of their secret sauce ... :-)

Red's tuning their OLPF to be the same for both. Whatever the maximum stills resolution of the sensor is, that's the same maximum resolution for the video mode. So they won't have any problems at all.

Red doesn't scale footage either (well, traditionally they haven't); they "window" the sensor. Which keeps the OLPF consistent and usable regardless of frame size. It compromises field of view, but keeps the aliasing at bay.

So on a lower-res camera (like a 3K Scarlet) you'll have relatively lame stills performance; I think the 3K chip has 6 megapixels. But when you get up to the 5K or 6K range, now you're talking about 18 or 24 megapixels, so the still performance should be pretty competitive with other still cameras. And all the while, no compromise on the video performance either because the OLPF is tuned the same for both.

i wouldnt buy a red just for the stills though... Id buy a dedicated stills for that.. it would be cheaper and has more advance features
