GH5 vs Micro Cinema Camera Skin tone Test

Color grading is bizarre. There truly is such a wide variation of acceptable results to people.

I see 'professionals' providing mixed feedback on a daily basis. If anyone has ever followed the 4.6K Mini release, you'll know that there was a massive delay, but after about 8 months or so, the beta testers slowly started releasing footage and then a lot of Vimeo and YouTube camera ambassadors (just as it is now with every camera) showcased so many different colors and grades. Some of them looked similar, but some of them looked like they were using completely different cameras.

And if you read the comments from the various videos on Vimeo or YouTube, you'd have people that LOVED and HATED each one. And a lot of that feedback came from people who worked in the industry (different levels of success of course).

Think about how the average viewer watches content...

There are certain grades in this thread that I like and ones I dislike, but I think the average viewer wouldn't really be too considered about it. It's only when you point something out and ask about it that the attention is generated.

I downloaded the recent GH5 file he put up.

What's an official V-Log LUT people are using with the GH5 for a basic transformation?

This is a Varicam LT one I have had in FCP X for a while and this is what it's making the footage look like.

Not any more bizarre than painting, sculpture, architecture, music, graphic design, illustration, 3D animation or dance. Color grading is an art and like any other form of art is very subjective. Not bizarre at all. This is what working in a creative field means. It isn't supposed to be a paint by numbers situation.

I don't think you can compare them so easily.

The others are more involved and complicated, and have to keep improving almost constantly.

I just think they are different.

I can wack a stone a few times and call it a sculpture, but it wouldn't pass as art to anyone. Or I can spin around a few times and call it a dance, but it wouldn't be taken too seriously. Strum a guitar and call it a song, you know...etc.

But in the video world, you can throw on any of these grades and they would all work unless they are being compared side-by-side and you're looking for an analysis.

You even see videos exported in C-Log or S-Log with barely any manipulation, and it goes unnoticed. The videos get thousands of likes and maybe only one person says, "Hey, did you notice the color was weird?".

So IMO, I meant the wide variation of acceptable results to people is bizarre; not the art form itself.

Hey, this is challenging mostly because it was underexposed severely on the GH5 in my opinion, likely because of the background highlights. The camera doesn't like being underexposed internally, you lose quite a bit of saturation/depth where it's important. The BMD camera is also slightly too far under, but even ProRes from that camera is likely one of the best iterations of ProRes implemented by a camera, so you can get away with quite a bit.

Micro w/Comet Color Ursa Mini LUT (has not been converted to this camera yet, haven't started working on it)

These look the best to my eye. Good job Kholi. I'm interested in your LUTS.

I actually think the GH5 is way superior in practically every aspect.
Look at the comparison video I made (Download the original and watch in 4K):

For anyone interested in trying Logarist with the GH5, I'd urge you to shoot in Cinelike D, not V-Log L. Logarist has a V-Log L input transform designed specifically for the GH4, not the GH5, and I don't have much confidence that V-Log L is at all similar on the two cameras.

Cinelike D seems to be quite similar between the GH4 and the GH5. I've been pleased with the GH5 Cinelike D footage I've tried in Logarist.

Don't be fooled into thinking that shooting in a log profile magically makes your footage better or gives you more dynamic range. Great looking footage can come from any kind of profile, if it's processed correctly.

balazer, when will you have a Logarist update with vlog support?

Shot correctly, vlog gives a strong boost to DR that is certainly apparent, so I (and I assume most others) are shooting in vlog nearly exclusively.

Same here filmguy123, I even shoot my weddings/receptions in V-Log L with really good results.

Using log in the GH5 does give a better dynamic range and allows much more flexibility in editing.

I find it absurd to suggest that if you want to color correct/grade your GH5 footage you should use cine-d and your LUTs instead of using v-log-l.

Have you tried Cinelike D with Logarist? Have you measured the difference in dynamic range of V-Log L? On the GH4, V-Log L has virtually the same dynamic range as a standard profile. I haven't tested the GH5.

I don't know. I don't have a GH5 to profile. Anyone want to lend me one?

Maybe I'll skip V-Log L and just build a transform for Hybrid Log Gamma, which is supposed to be released for the GH5 later this year.
