As you may or may not have noticed, this is indeed my first post here. I've 'guested' this forum for quite a while - enough to know how great it is. I registered today specifically for this post, and of course it's incentive to continue posting.

I have a Canon Vixia Hf200, and I'm looking to buy myself a microphone of some sort.
My main projects are short films, so I was thinking of a boom. I've read all these lazy reviews on some mics which state that 'Canon hasn't heard of the term boom' and I would like to know ;

1) Boom mic for short films, or not?
2) Does Canon have decent mics that can be boomed?
3) Any recommendations?

All advice would be appreciated, well don't tell me to sell my camera. :P

Welcome to the forum!

1. The general idea is to avoid using the on-camera mic where at all possible. In addition to boom mics, lavaliers, plant mics, and boundary mics all have a place. However, boom mics tend to offer the most versatility so they are often the first thing people pick up.

2. As far as I know, all the Canon brand mics communicate via the smart hot shoe on the camera. To use it on a boom you would need a custom cable designed to maintain that linkage - I'm not aware of anyone who makes such a cable. So for all practical purposes, Canon mics are not suited for booming.

3. Check the "New to Audio?" thread here on dvxuser for a good introduction to what is available, and questions to ask to find what would be suitable for you.

Am I right by saying that a Canon Camera requires a Canon Mic?

I'm kind of a 'noob' when it comes to equipment to be quite honest, so my questions may sound a little stupid.
