Vimeo will erase your source files - unless you pay

Your fussy cuz they are free but not good enough for the price?
lol
oi vay
You do realize your raw file will still be on your computer, right?

Are you able to download the uncompressed source files from YouTube?

Seems to me that it's not a huge deal. Vimeo's compression is so much more friendly than YouTube's, the Vimeo player has given me less trouble than YouTube, and they aren't deleting the videos entirely. This change does not bother me at all.

And I keep my truly uncompressed source files archived in my edit suite.

Nah, I have no beef with their policy in that sense - meaning, of course you are going to have archives on your own computer. However, the free ride is coming to an end. And I predict they'll die, because their advantage over youtube is just not big enough. There's not enough money in the tiny market vimeo is serving, and youtube will crush them. We'll see.

I don't think Vimeo will die because of this. They've managed to get as far as they have despite YouTube, and it's because they serve a niche market. Where YouTube is everyone's digital poop clearing house, Vimeo is targeted to artists and content creators and has taken a major foothold in that demographic. And while there are a few Vimeo users who post digital poop, the overall quality of content and community are mich higher there.

Not to knock folks who use YouTube, but there is so much trash there that it gets tiring after a while.

From a business standpoint this makes perfect sense. I would imagine it's pretty expensive to store all those files, and support all the bandwidth of people downloading them. Especially as the site gets more users.
Having said that, I usually download the original files to watch them in higher quality. So I will miss that feature. Such is my tormented life.

...Where YouTube is everyone's digital poop clearing house...

I don't think I could have expressed it better myself. As stated before, they are different beasts. I go to Youtube to look at movie trailers, music videos, and "digital poop". I go to Vimeo when I want to see original works.

Besides, how many people are really going to quit Vimeo because the free users can now only have the .mp4 conversion and not their original files downloaded by others? How many even really care?

If you want to distribute your uncompressed movies, get an FTP site. I've never felt the need to download any movie off Vimeo, and I have no desire to let others download the stuff I put up there.

why Jim? you wouldn't want anyone to see an original file copy in it's intended size/resolution for promotional purposes? nothing is more pointlesss than seeing a video shot on RED or Phantom HD compressed for web if the original isn't available. they all look like my Canon A1 on Vimeo. Not Vimeo's fault.

Well, I suppose if I was trying to get work as a DP, I could see the point in wanting people to download my original, uncompressed files. But, if that was the case, I'd probably be happy to pay Vimeo $60 a year.

What are you talking about? Any video you upload to vimeo is already severely compressed. You don't upload a 20 gig full res 1080 file.

May just be me but keeping links are good enough for going back and watching. Do people really need to download the original material in whatever higher format it was uploaded in?

Maybe if it's a tutorial where it's hard to see the print. But I don't download anything from Vimeo.
Is it that big of a deal?

As for clients, I would assume noone depends on Vimeo for wowing. Maybe as a starter topic of interest. Best to provide your own downloads/server-links for that though. I would think.

Otherwise, 'no problemo por favour' in my best/worst spanish.

....err 'muchos cervasa por favor'. See, I'm catchin on don't you think?
'Manyana. Muchos malo' See? I'm getting it. Sorry. Slid off topic. Vimeo, oh yeah...
