Viewing HD footage

So, I posted earlier on my setting up to shoot a movie musical on the HVX200. 3 camera shoot, P2 cards for days. I used FCP 5.1.2 to import data off of the P2 cards and then reformatted in the camera. This worked well with the exception of renaming (in FCP only) and organizing the tons of media files. All of those randomly named files get a bit ovewhelming especially when in the heat of shooting one isn't as careful as one should be due to the sprint of it all.

Son now I am finally ready to edit this monster. Just bought my new Dual-core working OSX10.4.8 8GB of RAM FCP Suite 5.1.2

Got the Panasonic HD monitor to go along with the new 30 inch HD Apple Display.

My problem is that I don't know how to trust my eyes. I am so used to the output os my Sony NTSC monitor that I know where I am at visually. In this HD world, I can't quite trust what I am seeing, or rather am not sure what to trust- visually.

Also, I am trying to view my HD monitor using my DSR-11. Is that possible? Do I need a video deck or card or some piece of hardware so that I can view on my external monitor in real time?

Also, we shot in 720p 30. Anything I should know about the sequnce settings to prevent issues down line? I will ultimately be adding some DVCAM footage (Sony PD150) in the making of segments. Is there a tutorial or info available to make sure I don't run myself into any issues later?

Thanks for the help/direction.

My Panasonic HD monitor, I assume you mean the LH1700 or LH22600. Congrats. I'm jealous. I want one. My wife is the CFO and she says "show me the business plan." Enough of business woes...

You can't export DVCPRO HD through a DSR-11. That is a DV deck. You can export downrezed DV25 to a DSR11.

Short of a $25,000 HD1400 deck, you need either a capture card with SDI out (such as a Blackmagic or Kona card) or a Matrox MXO which will take your DVI output from the second head of your video card and give you DVI, SDI (with embedded autio), Composite or Component out.

You will need to uprez your DVCAM footage to HD. That will involve deinterlacing and using a plug in such as InstantHD or Resizer2. Be warned that the render times are long and the results will not match your gorgeous HVX footage. You are taking 720x480 and uprezing to 960x720 (or 1280x720-- we won't deal with that now). Those pixels have to come from somewhere.

Ned,

Thx for the reply.
You are correct- it is the LH1700W. Hmmm... do you mean one of those $1,500 blackmagic video cards? Yikes...

Interesting though, I AM getting an image from the DSR-11. It will play sometimes and not others and my image is sometimes squished.

As there is no sequnce setting for 720p 30, should I be using HDV 720p 30 or DVC PRO HD 720p 60?

Should I be having to render each clip in the timeline? Or does this mean my settings are wrong??

720p 30 960 x 720 DVCPRO HD

It means your sequence settings are wrong. Delete your current sequence and create a new one with the same settings as your clips.

Actually, you could get a $995 Matrox box which is much less than a capture card. But you are not going to be able to view HD without a device which accepts a DVCPRO HD feed, whether that is a Deck or a card or a Matrox box.

If you sequence settings match your clip settings, then you will not need to render. Just use an Easy Set Up in FCP appropriate to the footage you are editing.
