FS7: videos I shot today

Really nice work Ed finding a way to use dog and test shots in a finished piece. You can really see the effect of you working with an F35 in the patina. Thanks.

Thanks for the test, Ed! This looked good. I am not the biggest fan of non-F35 Sony images, but considering price/value the fs7 looks like the best offer out ATM.
The price of the C100mII is a clear indication of what the next C300 will cost and while it might have taken canon 2 years to break into the market and become the go-to camera for tv productions that want a "cine" look, the step to rival the 2/3" dominance is taken and a Sony product will probably be adapted much faster...

Interesting that you've regraded using Film Convert. My own tests in Premiere show more noise in Film Convert (with grain etc shut off) than matching colours and contrast with my own curve. That said, my own curve looks too clean and I prefer the more "organic" feel from Film Convert.

well 180 FPS is helpful - I didn't really do side by side comparisons or test charts or anything actually quantifiable or useful but the fs7 weighs 3 lbs and the f35 with batteries and monitor is like 15 lbs.

in terms of image - 444 12 bit out of the f35 can look wonderful and its dynamic range handling can be beautiful and its skin tones out of the box are natural and lovely in s gamut in most situations - but really I need to do a test - a real test.

I sent the fs7 back and I'm on a doc right now and then a bunch of commercial jobs but I really should do a test. but it's going to be pretty much f55 and f5 vs f35 look - but of course having a nice slo mo option is very useful and I think I'd wait till the raw recorder comes out then really see what's up with the images out of both.

Also Film Convert was less noisy in my quick work.

My videos were completely unscientific and just are for artistic purposes - i.e. I was lazy and just wanted to have an excuse to make a visual narrative idea I had and having the fs7 and knowing I had to return it quickly lit the fire under my butt. But I wish I did some test charts. but anyway - I would probably do f55 vs f35 in a test - wouldn't really think to bother with fs7 - but hey why not, right?

I want to thank you eddavid for shooting this fun little piece. Personally I get much more out of those "real life tests" than shooting test charts. It showed me that I really enjoy the image coming out of the FS7 with some quick grading. Most of the FS7 test clips that have popped up so far did not impress me. But then again, test charts are what they are.

But this short doc gave me a good impression what the FS7 can do. And it was funny. So thank you for that eddavid. Great job!

thanks - yes next time I get the camera I am going to test against f5, f35, red one, and f3.
I blew it this round - I didn't have the f5 available and I wanted to make something fun instead. Also I was greedy for the chance to do my comedy.

Thinking of upgrading from F3 to FS7 next year, look forward to see your test result and thought!
