I always thought the weathersealing of the 7D was abit pants for me, because none of my old manual Nikkor lenses are like that. I'd have to put a bag over them, and use one of my portable strobist lighting umbrella stands. Then I'd have to later on cook the lenses with a lightbulb to avoid potential fungus growth too.

My days...

But yeah I'm really looking forward to the T2i/550D because it means I can get rid of my D90 and also have functionality of the D300/7D (oooh metering with manual lenses..).

Ah...thought the umbrella was some sort of slang for something to do with separate system sound, haha.

Skew being read in opposite directions will probably require handing out puke bags together with the 3D glasses. :)

i was considering in selling my 7D for a T2i and buy an L Series lens with it. But nah, I LOVE the 7D. Build quality and picture quality is/will be better then the T2i.

I heard it mention in RedUser. Makes perfect sense.

Of course there are CMOS sensors and CMOS sensors. Jim mentioned on Red Day that M-X is down to 5ms, while film usually takes 4ms. Mysterium is 9ms. Others are several times that.

Those guys obviously have a basic setup. Doesn't a mirror rig correct that? People have been shooting with RED ones for a while on 3D mirror rigs.

My beginner's understanding of 3D is that there are times to use a beamsplitter (mirror) rig, and there are times to use a "side by side" system.

But when people use the side by side system, it seems that they always want to have complete, accurate, and repeatable control over both the interocular distance (how far apart the sensors are) as well as the convergence (the angle of the cameras towards a center point on the focal plane. I'm not sure, but it doesn't look like that rig offers either...nor a way to focus the lenses at the simultaneously.

I'd be a novice to even try 3D, but I'm just throwing out the possibility that 2 cameras would give you. I wasn't specifically endorsing their particular preliminary setup.

I've made my own red/cyan 3D photos, since you can do that with 1 camera. I'd thought about trying to get another point and shoot identical to the one I have (since its cheap) and I could try my hand at 3D video, but never really went after it. Given that 3D is really starting to take off, it would be interesting to explore it at least from the side as a hobbyist before really getting into it. I'd probably only go for it if the T2i is indeed on par with the 7D and any tradeoffs are mitigated by the benefit of 2 cameras.

Anyways, just a thought. 1st requisite is 2 cameras. After that, all the technical stuff would follow. If you go to the website I linked to, they have some HD samples (1080p sample, 720p sample) that the red/cyan still is taken from. If you have glasses, watch them and see what you think about the imperfect "beta"camera system they debuted last year.

It caught my attention.

Now, if they had discontinued the 7D and replaced it with the 550D, then there'd be a good case to argue that it'd be just as good, only cheaper. But with the 7D on the market at the same time, there are obviously reasons that Canon believes that the 7D is worth $900 more (more than twice as much!) as the 550D. I don't know what those reasons are, of course, and we'll only know once we get our hands on it.

Barry, I'm wondering if the difference Canon is counting on is the better still capabilities of the 7D verses the 55D. That, and the rugged construction of the 7D to the 550D's plastic body, smaller view finder, etc.

Canon's website appears to be clear-same internals, or at least the same listed specs.

Oh, yeah. I totally see your point. I haven't shot 3D, but it would be a hell of a bargain to help build a learning rig. However, you still need more gear to factor in to the total.

I wonder if you could get some sort of affordable side by side plate with dumb but accurate adjustment for interocular separation and convergence. I would guess you might be able to find one that were decent to work with and not ridiculously priced, but it wouldn't be more than a big plate with markings, with two smaller spinning camera plates on it which could rotate and separate. Don't forget being able to pull focus on two lenses at once, for which you need two excellent matching lenses, a FF that lets you do that, and I believe you also need to adjust the convergence at the same time you pull focus. You could work around having to pull focus or any other adjustment on the fly... But you would also be limited by being unable to do tight interocular distances, for which you would need an even more expensive split rig. You could also work around that... but then you are very limited... still, you are shooting 3D! And learning!

I think that's what the folks here are hoping. That whatever compromises have been made, won't affect the video recording.

I'm beginning to wonder if the only differences are fps for stills and build quality. Hmm...if a 7D body can sell well after some demo footage shows up online and some time passes for the banter about any differenences....I just might take the plunge.

EDIT: I guess this one actually talks about the video mode, but doesn't add anything to what we already know. "Same video as 7D"

it's kind of funny this debate is going on.

i wonder if people would have thought the same thing when the rebels came out, and would have ultimately been compared to the xxDs. in those days it was "just" photos, but now that video is involved, people seem to care less about other premium aspects.

i voted no, i will not sell my 7d. i can't say i am attached to material goods, but i'm not the type to just drop everything for something newer and cheaper.

Inside info on the T2ii?

Inside info on the T2ii?

I just stumbled upon this on Youtube. It looks as if Philip Bloom has already voiced his preliminary thoughts on the T2ii vs. the 7D:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdF-jHkO4AE

In the comments section at the bottom, he had this to say:

@anubisx00 dont do that. the 7d will have better image quality for sure. trust me

I just ordered the T2ii yesterday instead of the 7D. This comment has me rethinking this decision.

Well, for one thing it's $900 less. Something's gotta give, when you cut the price in half.

Second thing is that it has a "newly developed sensor", so it's not the same as the 7D. Now, until someone does a side-by-side comparison, we won't know how it really compares. But if it's different, those are two pretty good reasons why it might be.

Comparisons are coming in. I think everyone can judge for themselves now without pointing to spec sheets and price tags.
