thx for the link

The quick release option seems like the cheapest most versatile way to go. I'm getting 2 so I can quickly go from shoulder/tripod to steadicam.

The RRS plate is pretty quick too so long as all your release plates are arca swiss. I've always found that the rounded edges of most arca swiss systems nicer than most video plates but thats just me. They just feel like they slide in easier and don't catch on as much stuff between plates.

Did I miss the discussion about bitrate? I doubt that the T2i will require Class 10 for video. With Class 6 card the speed is limited to 48 Mbit/s at best, less 20% or so to be safe, the bitrate should be 40 Mbit/s or less. The 7D has what, 48 Mbit/s ?

bit rates for t2i (aka kiss X4 in japan), 7D, 5DM2, 1Dm4
thanks to Uwe Lansing for finding this LINK

They certainly do look nice and those dual threaded quick release plates aren't ever going to move. The only problem I can see with manfrotto is that there is some bits protruding on the edge of the bottom of the quick release http://shashinki.com/shop/images/MAN-323-01.jpg that will require the drilling of a new mounting hole closer to the rear edge of most rail mounting plates. The really right stuff plates have a smooth bottom, I like a smooth bottom.

While we're on (or trailing off) the subject that yes, we've got a GH1 film in SXSW, did you guys also know that a film we did was the short film that screened in the opening-night red-carpet gala at Slamdance? Slamdance is another of the top-10 films in the world. And what was that film shot on? An HVX200. Not even a 200A, the original 200. How many folks here, in the DSLR thread, would consider a 200 "beneath" them? We took an HVX200 film to Slamdance, an HPX170 film to Tribeca* (another of the top-10 fests in America), and a GH1 film to SXSW.

The products are good enough. Just buy whichever one you like and go shoot!

*"Cold Calls" was in the Delta Fly-In Movies program at Tribeca

There it is, everyone. That's the bottom line, right there.

No possible way to know.

One truism you can pretty much count on is this: it won't be the same as the 7D. There will be reasons why the 7D costs more than the 550D. Just like there are reasons the 5D costs more than the 7D.

I have to agree with Barry's logic.

Also, as Canon says it's a newly developed sensor, if they wanted to keep costs down in a lower end model, why would they spend to develop a new sensor instead of using the existing 7D sensor unless this new sensor would be simpler and for that reason cheaper to produce? (which normally means not of equal quality.)
There has to be a catch. Just a plastic body and a couple of missing buttons can't be worth a 50% discount.
In any case I'm certainly keeping my 7D.

Doesn't mean the compromises inherent in the 550D will MATTER to you though. Just like there's nothing about the 5D that would make ME want to spend the extra $1,000 over the 7D (even though there are many who would)...

Barry, have you tested the 5D vs the 7D video quality? For a while there was talk that the 5D produced better video but nobody was ever able to prove it or provide "scientific" tests. Have you looked into that?

I did an informal 5d 7d (D3s) test - mainly the D3s

here

I beleive the 5 to ba a little better in daily use apart from the kin frame rate

when I say daily use because f4 5.6 perform better than 2.8 on my 2.8 lenses on the 7d and I tend to choose 4/5.6 with the 5d

also IMO difraction kicks in earlier with the 7

I have not, simply because I find the 5D's use of 30p-only to be completely unsuitable to anything I'd want to do. Whether others find it acceptable or not, I don't. Never had the slightest interest in the 5D, so no, I haven't bothered to test it.

I'll take Kholi's word for it though; he's got both and if I remember correctly, he says that when shot in identical circumstances the footage is identical.

If there's any technical edge the 7D has it, and it's probably based on compression. It also exhibits, to my eye, less Noise or FPN at lower ISOs.

Otherwise, just like the T2i and 7D, the footage is pretty much identical.

Sorry for posting this here if it is too off-topic...I try to make it fit at the end...you'll see!

Regarding the sentiment that these sensors are quickly becoming "fixed" as the best versions that they can be...

RED evidently broke the 80% barrier in terms of measured resolution from a Bayer patterned sensor. Also the 90% barrier, though not by much (if my math is right...4.1/4.5=91.11%).

4.5K sensor shooting 4.1 measurable.

The announcement thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=552384#post552384

Of course, I'm sure everyone will want this independently verified, but it just goes to show that sensor size isn't everything. And that making a great camera isn't as simple as taking an APS-C sensor and throwing it in front of a video camera. There is a lot of hardware and (undoubtedly proprietary) software that lets digital cinema cameras, not just RED, do what they do.

Now, remember, the T2i has a newly developed sensor at half the price of the 7D. Does that mean Canon has actually improved its capacity? Or only relatively improved it in relation to price (i.e., same or similar performance at half the cost). What else does Canon have to do to its hardware in order to make their cameras work the way we dream they will one day?

I think maybe we should all just take a deep breath and exhale, then wait for this T2i to make it's appearance and follow the information which will then come online about the motion recording plus/minus attributes that are posted.

Just my take on it.

Performance wise on paper there's not much in it- http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/338|0/(appareil2)/329|0/(appareil3)/305|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Canon/(brand2)/Canon/(brand3)/Canon

The MKII kills the other 2 in low light ISO but loses this advantage because you have to stop down 2 stops to get comparable "cine" DOF with the APS-C cameras.

Thats pretty interesting squig. Especially the sensor frame rate of 3.7 vs 8 as that is the part that may affect the video.

So long as 3.7 is fast enough to get pixel-binned 1080p off aps-c at 24 frames then the only difference would be burst mode on stills

The Nikon D90 has better low ISO performance than the Canons so it's going to be really interesting to see what Nikon delivers with the D90 replacement due in a few months. I expect it will have manual controls, 1080p, a better codec, and hopefully won't overheat like the D90 does. If so I'll sell my MKII and buy 2 of them and a Tokina 11-16. That should keep me happy until I can scrape up the $$$ for a scarlet S35 or somebody brings out something comparable.

For $800 I don't think there's too much to complain about with the T2i/550D and it makes it a little more annoying still having to wait for the 24p firmware update.

If nikon are smart they will bring out a vDSLR, 1080p 24fs without Auto Gain Control
and a lot of people would switch in a heartbeat

such a simple change with such huge ramifications

I would definately switch to the T2i.

Mainly because of the ERGONOMICS!!

Finally, what looks like one handed and convenient right hand operation. Plus it's lighter and smaller too!

Also it will have the cuter "psst!" shutter sound, which is cooler than the "cha-cham" noise the 7D does... right?

? not sure what you are talking about. We are all using these vDSLR's to shoot video. Once the shutter is up its silent except for any whir from the lens.

AGC is the cripple across all current vDSLR's that prevents the line in from recording useable audio in with the codec.
At the mo, everyone is lumbered with 2 system audio and sync in post.

The first vDSLR that comes out without AGC will kill the competition or force all the others to bring out a firmware update.

Look maaaaan, it's very important that I get the psst sound and the ergonomics. Otherwise I may as well stick with a 7D. Nicer that it's cheaper too.

Not bothered about AGC or weather proofing to be honest. Seperate sound and an umbrella is fine anyway...

Zacuto are bringing out an umbrella for the T2i for a mere $380

Sorry Steve I couldn't resist.....I'm putting in an order for some zip gears.

Umbrella?

I always thought the weathersealing of the 7D was abit pants for me, because none of my old manual Nikkor lenses are like that. I'd have to put a bag over them, and use one of my portable strobist lighting umbrella stands. Then I'd have to later on cook the lenses with a lightbulb to avoid potential fungus growth too.

My days...

But yeah I'm really looking forward to the T2i/550D because it means I can get rid of my D90 and also have functionality of the D300/7D (oooh metering with manual lenses..).
