Sorry if this has been mentioned but this tread is already too long to wade through on my slow work computer. Assuming the image was exactly the same. My only concern is the weight of the camera its about 300g different about a third at least lighter. Is this going to cause issues of stability when using handheld does anyone have experience with this issue from the 7D and maybe the 500d?

My assumption is it will make handheld stability a problem. Maybe

Possibly but I think there will be some very easy solutions to add dead weight and size to the tiny 550D.

For the umpteenth time, you really can't compare a camera worth TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to one worth THOUSANDS.

I'm sorry for the ridiculous emphasis, but I feel it's absolutely futile to draw a comparison between the Canon DSLRs and the Red cameras, it's like comparing a Casio with a Rolex. Both do the same job well, but one does it with better style and finesse.

This is in response to the seemingly hundreds of posts making comparisons.

In general, I agree, though I think the Casio vs. Rolex argument pushes it a bit too far. More like a Tag vs. Rolex. :) Last time I checked, camera style and finesse didn't show up on the screen!

Also, it isn't just people at the lower end of the market making the comparisons. There has been plenty of interest from people who wouldn't normally give a passing glance to a sub $20k camera. I think at the end of the day, they are just another tool. They excel in certain areas, and completely fall over in others. Use them for what they are good at, and you can get shots that would otherwise be impossible.

I had a feeling I was being wooshed, but for the sake of saving face, I thought I'd follow through with the general idea to the end. It wasn't aimed directly at your post (though I wont lie that it prompted it...) and I didn't mean to cause any offence.

It does annoy me, however, that there are loads of threads coming up trying to draw comparison between Reds and 7Ds, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the 550D to 7D topic is going to be raised countless times in the coming months as people decide which camera to buy. I think, the best advice, in every scenario, is to buy what your budget can afford. Technology is ephemeral, it wont be "the best" or even adequate for long, because of the pace at which these things progress. Buy the best you can, and be content in your decision for as long as it takes you to be able to afford the next best.

I just wish that more people would understand this and heed this advice, before creating another god awful comparison thread in which people have to repeat this same advice over and over and over.

[/end rant]

To actually contribute something to thread, if this camera were around when I was making my decision between the 5D and 7D, it would have made it a whole lot more difficult. Unless some terrible flaw in the 550D comes to light in the coming weeks, the video shouldn't be too dissimilar to that of the 7D's, meaning the money saved could contribute to a very pretty lens for first time buyers, which is an appealing prospect.

I'm still not decided on whether this camera will completely undermine the 7D's market position. It was fairly black and white previously, if you wanted a camera that shot all the mandatory frame rates and sizes, for a budget, you'd go for the 7D, if you wanted full frame, then the 5D was your goto camera. Now that it's been announced that the 550D should do everything the 7D does, albeit lacking a few advanced (and under used) features, to me it seems like a no brainer to go for the 550 over the 7.

Which means that there will almost unquestionably be something lacking, something missing. It's half the price. There's a reason for that. Just give it a couple of weeks for people to shake it out and figure out where the cost savings are.

I'm curious about it. I shoot with an HVX and have buckets of Nikon lenses with aperture rings. The beauty of the new rebel is it's relatively inexpensive and I can use adapters to use my Nikon lenses on it. Since the Canon has a 1.6 crop as opposed to the Panasonic GH1's 2x crop, my 17-35 lens will still be moderately wide angle on the Canon. I'm also waiting to see what Panasonic does with a GH1 successor. I like its flip-out screen. My general approach with DSLRs is they are there as good b-cams to get you that nice DOF isolation shot. If you're doing the lockdown interview with the HVX, you can use the DSLR to capture an alternate angle and cut them together.

As for what could be lacking in the rebel over the 7D, it is very possible that that the cost cutting measures affect mainly still photo aspects and that video capture may actually IMPROVE as Canon engineers continually figure out better ways to implement video capture in DSLRs. Cost cutting measures on the rebel will be in these areas at the very least: the viewfinder will be dimmer and smaller (not that video users will see it), autofocus will be slower and generally more primitive (not that video users will use AF), the frames-per-second still capture is about half the 7Ds, and you will have to dig around a lot more in menus to manually control the camera as opposed to punching dedicated buttons. As you can see, most of these cost cutting measures impact still use.

Or I can hope that Nikon comes out with a better DSLR in its D700 replacement. Then I've got my Nikon lenses working great.

This is my theory too. If people who are mainly interested in the video feature are testing the 550D against the 7D, which I'm sure will happen here, they may not find any noticeable cost cutting measures so that outcome should not the ruled out.

What we know for sure is that for stills, the price difference makes sense. I'm going to guess that there will be little difference between the 7D and T2i in image quality (probably similar to the slight differences between 5D and 7D...) when it comes to the video side though. You all have to remember, the video function of these Canon cams is still mostly tacked on and unrefined. The 7D was just the first (and still ONLY) cam where they went out of their way to make the video function easier and more accessible.

I'm fully aware that this camera will get run through it's paces here by DVXUsers. Having said that, the video at this link: http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/eosmovie/index.html

(already posted)....has such a familiar 7d look and feel. I'm not the biggest fan of that look, but for 799? Wow...that is looking pretty hard to argue with. I'm aware that it could have some WILD and CRAZY problem that will be a deal breaker....but considering the fact that Kholi had me convinced that Canon was announcing a new chair....this is looking REAL GOOD about now. :)

LOL! I wasn't the one that said chair! I said Projector at the BAFTA thingy. Hahaha

....well whoever said it, I was laughing my butt off. :) GEEZ these are exciting times! I know that the 7d has it's MANY downfalls, but buying one for 1/2 price DANG! The thing I'm looking at as I watch this video from Japan is....

1. Is the image distracting? If I'm trying to tell a story, and doing a good job at it, is the image sooooo bad that it DETRACTS from the story. Watching this footy, that is obviously NOT professional (which I appreciate by the way....we all can't be Barry Green, Kholi, and Phillip Bloom)...gives me a look at the "worst case scenario"....and I don't find myself being distracted....TRUE, I'm also NOT inspired, the image doesn't BLOW ME AWAY...but I'm not sure if I can do that anyway, (no matter what tool I'm using).

2. Compared to other current tools, is this TRASH? In other words, although there may be better DSLRs/Video cameras out there...are they SO MUCH BETTER that footage from this would be embarrassing to post? I recognize that good enough for a customer that I am charging 5,000 for a project is a different question. I'm asking if I shoot a short film and post it online, is this T2i's footy so bad, compared to footy shot on another camera, that a viewer will say, "DAMN....nice story, but I could hardly focus on the story because the image was so bad!" (I felt this way watching parts of Star Wars Episode II....compared to films from the same era, that footy was DISTRACTING...the terrible story didn't help matters, but that's what I mean.)

3. Is the cost savings significant enough that what I use the money for will actually HELP my other productions? So, if I save 100.00....fair enough. What can I get for 100.00? Uh....I can't name anything significant enough to justify changing my camera choice. 800.00? WOW! How about a Tokina 11-16? (and still have 200.00 left over!) Or how about a second camera? It's WAY faster to shoot with 2 cams than having to shoot the same scene twice and edit it together.

So....when I look at this camera and the NEW DIMENSION it STRATEGICALLY adds to my approach as far as production equipment goes....I'm excited out of my mind!

(Maybe I'll get excited about a new chair later when I'm at Kholi's level.) :)

Sidebar here,
So i heard that because it can only do the 4 frame burst for stills than its processor isn't as fast or something to the sort. So could that mean that it will have the same problem as the 5D with its HDMI out while recording?

Exactly -- for the price tag, if it looks even close to the 7D, it's unreal...

Excellent way to look at it. It really doesn't matter whether it looks like a Red, or even a 7D... the question should be: can you do with it, what you want to do? If so, and it fits in your price bracket, all the comparison questions really become moot, don't they?

So....when I look at this camera and the NEW DIMENSION it STRATEGICALLY adds to my approach as far as production equipment goes....I'm excited out of my mind!
Yep, it does look fantastic and it certainly is far more affordable. I am optimistic about it; I just hate to see the expectations rollercoaster get so out of whack...
