VC vs IS

From peoples personal experience which does the best job at stabilising?

From Vimeo videos I have looked at the VC (Tamron) seems better while the Canons IS seems to smooth but Jerk the image around.

Or do other lenses systems work better?

If I compare my Canon kit lens (18mm-135mm) to the Tamron 17mm-50mm there is a difference. The Tamron VC is very good for photos as it jerks the image stabile. It really is pretty strong. The Canon isn't as good for photos as it isn't as strong.

But the side effect is that the Canon is actually better for videos as it doesn't make as huge movements as the Tamron.

I've been thinking about selling my 17-50 Tamron and upgrading to the new 17-50 VC but your post gives me pause. Are you saying that the Tamron VC is too "strong" for video? "Jerks" doesn't sound good at all...

Hm, that's odd. I love the VC feature on my Tamron 17-50mm. It works quite well and I don't see it causing issues in handheld video.

You're sure you're not using it on a tripod?

I had the opportunity to check out both a Canon IS and then right afterwards, a Tamron VC today... like Kegan I ended up buying the VC.
I did find the Canon IS to be a little more level headed and smoother... but the Tamron is still pretty damn good. Absolutely eliminates jello caused by micro shakes and jitters. As long as you're floating around your subject or just raw hand holding, the VC is great.
