Varicam Mini ?

A "not 4K" pro camera is a no-go at this day and age.

My take is that a "mini LT" is not doable but a "maxi GH5" may be. But that almost brings one back to AF200. LT.

Well the 4k debate is open. Personally I rate a camera by Data Rate and bit depth.

For example Sony F35 has a higher data rate and bit depth than an '4k' A7s, and is IMO more 'pro'

The Arri Alexa is another non 4k camera that I consider to be fairly more pro than the '4k' Gh4.

Producers may not see it the same way of course.

Of course a 3k chip and in camera 4k upscale coud kid the producers (Amera)

The MP race in stills camera seems to have stalled at around 20mp for the 'pro' cameras - personally I don't think MFT has enough chip area to make nice 4k (a pure guess)

Film was always done in 'cinema' S35 and 'doc' S16 using the same stock. Of course low quality S16 films like Hurtlocker were not pro, or watchable on the big screen, and made no money.

Sure the GH5_SDI_XLR could be a title with the Varicam name protected.

I dont really follow the AF200 but here is what I think I know..
-the zoom lens feels plastic
-the highlights feel plastic
-bit depth is 8, the compression ratio high
-one cannot attach a 0.95 voigltander lens.

I may be wrong here and if so should consider its purchase

Forget about the low end. The Panasonic brand is not going to be perceived as on the same level as Arri and Red by making cheaper cameras that will go on lower budget shoots with potentially less talented people behind them producing less than ideal images!

They should release a 65mm Varicam halo product for the range.

Why stop there? "A sensor as big as the screen! A window to the world! Introducing VariCam Grand Canyon Camera Obscura. The whole room is the camera."

Remember, we do actually have to SELL a few of these things.

I'd like to place a preorder on the Obscura. Do you have a price yet?

We expect there will only be tone client (you), so all R&D costs will have to be amortized through the sale to you. Plus it'll take a few wafers to get that chip working (just a few...), so I figure $20M should cover it. Give or take a mil.

When can I expect the bag o' cash?

Well there's no shortage of customers for the Red Dragon VV and most of those customers have had to watch Panavision jump the queue. I think the Varicam sensor has better DR and colour and is much more sensitive so I think you'd sell a few.

Who are Pansonic trying to compete with? Red and Arri or Canon and Sony?

I really just meant bigger than super35 to go against VV and DXL. I've loved Panasonic since my DVX100 days and want to see the company succeed, but I feel they're in no man's land at the moment and they need to make some noise.

Hi Guys,

Im curious how much of a loss of core operational functions would there be if you streamlined LT and controlled the camera with the wifi and removed the control panel?

Do you mean will we have the free app running on an iPhone or iPod? Yeah, I think so. I'll have it on my phone! If you own an IOS device you can load it for free and try it out anytime. Search the App Store for VariCam ROP.

Mitch is teasing a small looking camera on Twitter - not with the varicam Twitter handle

Looks like a gh5 af100 cross to my eye - great

:cool::cool:

Feel free to ask me anything. I'll likely just answer "no comment," but feel free to ask.

Well we know it's EF mount at least since that is a Sigma zoom on the camera.

Pretty sure we know it has an m43 sensor because it has a Panasonic m43 lens on it...

Speculation, but what sigma lens would that be? I thought for a moment it was the 18-35 but clearly it's not looking closer at the shape.

Look back at the post you made in the other thread...it looks like the Sigma 24-35mm.
