Varicam 2?

The SDX900 isn't a bad camera. I'm shooting a pilot next with four of them. It does like that's the camera the poster was thinking of.

SDX900 is an amazeing camera! Not as great as CineAlta or Vericam (not even in the same res ballpark) but still top of the line of SD cameras. Also it's mad cheap to rent so whenever i can i go with this baby on any shoot.

So what was your question about Varicam 2?

Well I thought that the Varicam was only $27000. Meaning that when the Varicam 2 comes out and it's P2 based, it should cut $16000 off the price because it doesn't rely on the DVCPRO HD heads.

SDX900 is probally the best SD camera period.

As for the Varicam being 16k cheaper.. i doubt that will happen.. Im sure they will find something new to do with that savings... and the P2 "guts" isn't free. I suspect they will be about the same.

1080x1920x10bit 4:2:2 hopefully.

HD D5 is a rather expensive Panasonic format to work with.. the decks are over 100k $$$.. It is however 1920x1080p (no decimation), 8bit or 10bit compressions, or a true 1:1 no compression at 60i SD. data rate of 235Mb/s. color depth is 4:2:2.

Tape size is the standard 1/2" can record upto 8 channels of audio, tape length is about 2 hours.

D5 has always been a delivery format.. not a camera format. But its far superior to HDcam in terms of even just compression, where HDcam is 8:1 and D5 is as low as 4:1... close to DV. HDCAM SR is the top of the chain of HD formats.. but is H-E-double hockeysticks to work with.

Now I did hear about a 2/3 inch DVCPro HD P2 camera coming out next year in the $20k+ range. Is that what you were thinking about?

would that mean 4:4:4 12bit?

If it's DVCPro HD, then what possible advantages would it have over the Varicam?

you mean the 20k camera.. i would assume there wouldnt be much of an advantage, other than price.

ok, reverse question then. What possible advantages would the Varicam have over the 20k dvcprohd cam?

Whoa dang!! I just did a search. 600mbps for HDCAM SR.

Which translates to 1.77 minutes on a 8gb P2 card........... :thumbdown
