HI

just got this Lens and it is amazing. Now, I need to reduce some light otherwise the focus becomes REALLY hard. Wastrying to find some variable ND filter for it.
Any suggestion ?
I guess I need to find a 52mm cos that is what's written on the lens. I was hoping to use the same filter on my other lens (Tamron 17-50) but I guess I can't due to the different size (I am getting it shortly). The tamron seems to mount a 72mm filter.

Can someone confirm this before I will buy the wrong filter ? :)

Maybe this for the 50mm ?
THX

You need to get the largest one that you can afford. Then buy step-up rings to make it fit on all of your lenses. Step-up rings are very inexpensive.

Ah ..... interesting ..... any suggestion for such vari FD filters ? Nothing to get broken, maybe in the 50-100 usd range ?

A lot of the fader ND's on ebay are optical XXXX, I bought one that guaranteed it was a Lightcraft but it wasn't and they won't respond to my emails.

Look up Lightcraft on the web and try their new Mark II version ($125) or perhaps better quality from Singh-Ray but over $300.

I would avoid it. Get the Light Craft MkII its only $125 and they developed to answer critics of their previous version. These cheap ones are made of plastic instead of glass and on telephoto they degrade badly.

Thx for the feedback, I already came across some of these and I guess it's no point to put some shi...ty plastic in front of a nice 1.8 lens :) I will be doing 95% only video work and so far got no tele and not planning to get one in a short time.
Found this link with some useful explanations about the filter. I could probably get the 77mm and mount on my lense with a step up ring as suggested. My Tamron 17-50 mounts 72mm while the 50mm has a 52mm ring size. The 82mm goes way too expensive.

ya, 77 should be good to cover most lenses. I would say 77 is the minimum size you want.

Wait... you want to eliminate light because the focus is really hard? Do you mean you have TOO shallow DOF and you want to deepen your DOF? If so, a variable ND is used for the opposite purpose. Push your aperture down instead if you just want deeper DOF. If you want to shoot at F1.8 for the shallow DOF and find that the images is just too bright, THEN use an ND filter.

Indoor is fine but outdoor during the day I get too much light and need the ND filter.
I will get the 77 ND and then 2 step-up rings (52-77 and 72-77). Is it possible to mount some extra protective glass in front of the ND fader ? That I could also use to simply protect the lenses ? IS it advisable ?
