F5: V7 firmware big changes

I couldn't tell , but did they also enable LUT's in Custom? adding slog3.cine and LUT's to Custom would be the big kahuna - a mini Alexa.

After using a deciphering key to read that PDF, no.

No LUTS in custom mode. Only a new Rec2020 color space for custom mode. There is no REC2020 in CineEI mode but you can shoot sgamut3 and use a 3D LUT to convert to REC2020.

The matrix just got bigger. (and more confusing for all)

I think the bigger news are the changes to the user interface to speed up selections. While Rec.2020 is properly included in the custom mode and not CineIE, it's usage at all is questionable. The gamma transfer of 2020 is exactly the same as 709, only the RGB primaries change. That virtually assures you will be baking in a format that is dead on arrival. It may be a long time before any display fully supports the 2020 color space and the 709/2020 gamma curve burned in will exclude recordings for HDR unless you also shoot in Slog2/3 without benefit of MLUTs. The best bet therefore is to continue shooting S-Log3 with Sgamut3.cine in CineIE, which covers the full DCI-P3 color space and HDR which is likely for Ultra-Blu-ray.

Saw this announcement on the F5/55 community... but then it also looks like the thread Lenny started about v3 requests for the FS7 has been unlinked... or taken down?? Hopefully temporarily...??

Considering the timing I wonder if Rec. 2020 was added simply to compete with the specs of the soon-to-be-released C300 II.

Yeah , I don't know what happened with that. Don't think it was intentional on Sony's part, I made a correction to the first post and then it got stuck in my browser. Next thing I know it was gone. Maybe I'll put it up again.

Brilliant! Very excited to see the new interface in action, it's what these cameras have needed from the get go (and the revelation of All Files only partially fixed).

I don't know how important those changes are to the F5/55, but I'm quite disappointed they didn't add LUT's in Custom.
Is it extremely difficult or do these guys just not get what a vital change that would be to the camera and how disabling the current system is.

They've had almost a year and I doubt there will be many changes after the next firmware. Sony generally moves on. Very doubtful it will be in V3 for the FS7 if it wasn't in this one on the F5/55. Just my disheartened guess.

I mean really who cares about Rec2020 - how hard did they work on that instead of what matters? I'm busting my nut trying to come up with LUT's to take the place of a simple white balance because I have a lot of clients who want WYSIWYG. It will serve them right if the C300 II eats their lunch again.

I'm not so sure anymore Lenny. Updates like this new interface suggest to me that they really are listening pretty closely, and working to keep people using these cameras happy. In fact I now have the faintest glimmer of hope that they actually implement Arri-style hardware upgrades to the cameras that might finally allow some of these missing essential features to finally see the light of day:

- Proper LUT support
- False Colour Monitoring for SLOG3
- Assignable Button Centre Crop
- Broader range of WB presets for CineEI
- A new XAVC proxy codec, that can support up to the full 240fps of the cameras for people shooting raw

no ones going to buy the C300 11 when they can get more from the FS7 at half the price.. its going to sell like a chocolate fire guard.. talk about missed opportunity .. if only they had asked even one working DP over the age of 17.. about camera body design.. they would have all the C300 market.. that have now gone over to FS7.. its almost like they have a Sony sabotage unit working at Canon..

IMO, there will be new bodies soon ... but, given these updates, after the New Year and, if so, sometime around the NAB'16. C300 MKII is unlikely to be out in numbers before the New Year anyway.

Try and tell producers that! The C300 has an established reputation and so many of the producers I've worked with (here in the UK) seem hell bent on only using the Canon camera. With the imminent release of the MkII, I can't see them changing to other brands. :-(

I know the feeling.. and i could have bought one years ago and make a packet .. but after using one .. no way was ever going to buy that kettle cam.. but there are a lot of C300 owners who want to up grade to 4K.. or getting sick of the form factor and all the add ons to make it sort of work.. and they are buying the FS7 I know 3 dyed in the wool Canonites who have.. it just makes sense money wise.. if nothing else.. I,ll be the first to admit the picture looks good.. but why oh why did they ever design it so wrong.. TWICE.. !! .. I think their days are numbered TBH.. unless they do a total re design..

...was on a shoot the other day, two Canon 1DX's provided so my F55 stayed at home.

Canon also has seems to have a lot of promos around pricing/financing which combats the somewhat overpriced price tag.

FS7 is literally half the price on B&H.. body only.. and your going to need an EVF straight away with the C300 II.. so add a few more thousand on.. no high speed in 4K.. you,ll have $8,000 to spend on lenses etc and a better camera.. I don't think people buying at this level of camera are the big spenders.. these are people on a budget.. who would ever buy the kettle cam mark2 .. they said they had something in the bag when the FS7 came out.. and it was .. drum roll .. move of the same.. an F5 is only $500 more !!.. really they are dead in the water unless it gets a total re design..

Nope the C300II will sell just fine because all the existing users will upgrade from the C300I. Now they can finally admit that they like 4K lol. Canon also is very entrenched in certain market segments, I still come across a lot of jobs where people are looking to shoot on DSLR's. More specifically the Canon DSLR's so it is easy to shoe horn the C-Line into that market. They will sale a lot on brand recognition and the Canon stigma alone, not too mention the groundbreaking AF. I am still planning to buy an FS7 though because I feel like I am getting my money's worth and I have jobs that will pay for it.

Price doesn't matter for production houses who shelled the money out before the FS7 or even F5/55 existed. For them it's already paid for.

If looking to buy today sure there are more options.

Lots of media companies also use Canon because they can shoot stills as well as "decent" video. So the equipment is dual purpose. Many ways to look at it, but for a pure video camera the FS7 definitely can't be beat.

But they haven't shelled out for the C300 II yet.. they are run by bean counters.. you think they will pay $8,000 more for less of a camera .. I really doubt that.. in the F55/Amira/Alexa league maybe.. but not C300/FS7 level.. these people pick up receipts blowing down the road..
All the C300 owners will not up grade to the II.. I know 3 who haven't ..Canon have lost the buzz.. already its the old.. Canon are going to have to slash and burn that price tag to any large number of sales .. if AF is the main selling point of a professional camera.. sort of tells you a lot ..
