F5: V7 firmware big changes

I agree, C300II makes little sense. But there's always those who will buy it, finance it and write it off. It's not a big deal for companies, just a big deal for us independent owner operators. I agree there's not much value for our dollar to people like you and me.

Canon has always been expensive offering "less" features, but this isn't anything new. It will be interesting to see what happens.

But they haven't shelled out for the C300 II yet.. they are run by bean counters.. you think they will pay $8,000 more for less of a camera .. I really doubt that.. in the F55/Amira/Alexa league maybe.. but not C300/FS7 level.. these people pick up receipts blowing down the road..
All the C300 owners will not up grade to the II.. I know 3 who haven't ..Canon have lost the buzz.. already its the old.. Canon are going to have to slash and burn that price tag to any large number of sales .. if AF is the main selling point of a professional camera.. sort of tells you a lot ..

I dunno maybe they have lost some buzz and I do feel like the FS7 and even BMD has had a lot to do with that. But I also know some people are resistant to change, there are a ton of L lenses out there and people love Canon. Add that to good pic quality and I think they sale the C300ii in pretty darn good numbers. That being said even if I had the budget for it I don't think I would buy it.

Yep good point, there's the whole lens argument too, if you're heavily invested in Canon lenses, you've already drank the koolaid.

Yeah.. who knows maybe they will sell.. I think many C300 owners.. who don't have call for 4K.. will just hang onto their paid off C300,s rather than paying $16,000 for the mark II.. when i heard about the C300 II .. I really thought ok well if it looks like an F5/55 or a "real" camera.. i.e. not a VF at the back ! the very least longer than it is taller.. then well ok it might be something really worth looking into.. but un believably they came out with this same form factor !! WTF.. thats just plain nuts..

That argument was valid for few years but is slowly melting away. People see that Sony is not giving up, they're investing heavily in development of new E mount lenses and e-mount as a whole. Other thing is that they makes AF to work with other lenses as good as on native body (look A7RII) so you won't even need to change your lens set. One more year of aggressive Sony and Canon will soon lose all of it's advantages.

.. if only they had asked even one working DP over the age of 17.. about camera body design..

Amen and let's pass the offering plate around, brother Donny...

I don't know how many people, myself included, have told Canon(reps) in person at shows, in surveys, etc. about just HOW BAD the design is and lack of certain things and what they need to do. I know sales reps with BIG production equipment vendors who have tried to tell Canon things that they need to do if they really want to play in this sandbox, to no avail. Canon is going to do what Canon is going to do.

I have a 300mkI, among other cameras, but I'm not planning on a mkii purchase. I'll have to start losing a lot of calls, first. It still sees a lot of action between my use and rentals, but it's already fallen out of favor with my biggest client a while ago. I prefer actually using my 55, because I feel like I'm using a real camera and not hodge-podging together an erector set like I do each time I use my 300. And did I mention just how much fun it is feeding a nano flash, VF, on-board monitor and external 17" monitor from ONE SDI port on multi-cam shoots? By the time the signal makes it to the 17" at the end the delay is like an old kung-fu movie. And correct me if I'm wrong, there is still only ONE SDI out on the new 300. Seriously?! Even two isn't enough.

Massive mistake on a Canon side with C300II is a lack of 60fps 4K. I think people could forgive it's price and design but lack of 60fps in 4K for this price is shocking. It basically means it's not fully future proof - once people will start asking for 4K you will need to bring another camera for slow mo. C300II's got amazing AF that it's main selling point- perfect cam for gimbal, will also let you shoot footage that would be either impossible (just think about tracking your subject at F1.2...). I was seriously considering it but confirmation of missing 4K60fps cooled me down- I went fs7 route.

Hey guys! I guess I'm one of those rare satisfied C300mk1 owners. I've already put down money for the mk2. I certainly have my gripes against Canon and obvious and various limitations of their cameras, but I have to say the ergonomics isn't really an obstacle. Making a camera bigger is easy. The size has certainly helped me when shooting car interiors. I'll make a little post in the C300 forum after I get it up and running.

I'm in LA and considered picking up an FS7 or F5, but it's not a hugely popular camera series for a lot of clients. Some of my TV clients like the F5/55, but none of my narrative or music video clients ask for Sony cams, it's either Arri/Red or Canon. FS7 was popping up a lot this summer, but I've had a handful of clients nix it from future productions because of issues they've had with it (lens mount issues, color shifts and posterization on highlight edges). Talking with some rental house people recently they're not exactly thrilled with purchasing a new Sony camera every year. That being said, no matter how modest the firmware upgrade is, it's great to see sony still supporting the F5/55.

Run&Gun, I believe the mk2 has a Record out and an Monitor out. Not sure the limitations of each. I assume the camera can spit out LUT's through the monitor out. And for what it's worth, chatting with some Canon reps out here, it sounds like the new C500 will take on a more traditional cinema camera shape, but who knows.

And while the thread has morphed into piling on Canon, just back from Canon Expo in NYC. They showed 8K prototype both in a studio camera as well as their cine camera. Cine camera was at least for the prototype a C300/500 body with 8 SDI's coming out of an external box attached to an array of 8 Odyssey 7Q+ units. But they had no SSD's in the Odyssey's so not recording. Just showing output to a 4K on camera monitor. They had exactly 1 C300 Mk II and 1 C500. Both were just stuck in a passageway on Manfrotto tripods. With no batteries or external power.

WTF.. thats just plain nuts..

I think the C300ii will sell.

Simply there is a new way of shooting.. 'shooting PD'

17-55 at F8 (how else would a non image person focus S35 on a 480px screen covered in fingerprints)

AF will be excellent.

C100/300 goes with all kit in a carry on.

Personally I hate the C300/100, I call it the chrismas tree - but then I like things like 'eyeline' that no-one gives a stuff about any more, lets shoot gut cam up peoples noses with that 17-55 at 8.. its good enough!

Once you hang with these people you see that the C1/300 works perfectly for non composed images and on that basis is fantastic.

I might the guilty one for morphing the thread.. ..Canon makes great lenses.. the CN7 was a god send for me.. (and is helping the boss of easy rig get a new Bentley.).. its just so mind boggling that a camera with a great picture .. was just so incredibly, beyond even what you could write .. baldy designed..in all ways.. and then THEY DO IT AGAIN .. !! you can see the champaign corks flying at Sony when the II came out .. and the price tag.. and they could have been king of the world..

JM, I just looked and it DOES in fact have two SDI outs. Now, if they would have ditched the HDMI connector, they could have fit at least one, if not two more, SDI's. Maybe even TC IN and OUT simultaneously. Of course that doesn't seem to be on anyone's feature list anymore. Pretty much every broadcast or professional level ENG camera has always had TC IN and OUT connections for looping/jamming multi-cam shoots. I guess Canon and Sony never thought anyone would want or need to do that with their "cine" cameras. My F55 lists for almost $30k, you'd think it would have the ability to go IN and OUT at the same time. Heck, even my first Sony(UVW-100B) that cost about 1/3 of a new 55, did.

The thing about TC.. my iphone knows the fooking time.. not my $15g camera

I don't know why all cams dont have an accurate clock via wifi/gps and all NLEs just synch to TOD. It is not 1990.

EggZactly my train of thought. I keep thinking, or maybe hoping is the proper term, that Canon will wake the hell up. Or this could be the case of the mega sized company that cant scratch an itch.
