using my external mics

well i have external mics but they have 3.5 pin ends, the GH2 is 2.5 and i have not been able to find specific adaptors named as mic socket adaptors, i have bought several including
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000S5OETK/ref=oss_product and strait ones but i am reluctant to use them as they stick out and i worry about knocking the adaptor while using the camera,what i want to know is if the ones i have bought marked as for ipod etc will harm the GH2 in any way,idealy a right angle 2.5-3.5 pin adaptor rather than lead would be ideal but i can only find 3.5-3.5 ones.

I thought you could control sound level on the GH2--and monitor it visually (which sucks compared to headphones but is something).

Its not so much being unable to control the sound with an external that concerns me but the fact i can only find adaptors like on my link and no specific mic socket adaptors.For an upmarket camera pana [GH2] are being unfair putting that 2.5 mic plug on,for their own mics true but they could make mics with normal plugs, i am spent out at present and have good external mics but i am concerned using the adaptors in my link.

I'm thinking about ordering a couple of these 2.5mm plugs, and using them to replace the 3.5mm plugs on the consumer grade shotgun mics, and maybe one of those new Rode Video Mic Pro's, for shooting home video type stuff. I have a couple of the Hosa adapters, and they always fail (snap, crackle, pop), no matter how much I butcher them with a razor blade trying to "fix" them.

Not that I trust my soldering skills all that much, but I probably won't use it for any pro work anyways. :D

I'm not an indie film-maker, but I can't understand why anyone would consider using the 2.5mm jack...or the built-in mic...for anything. Digital recorders and decent mics are so darned cheap these days!

I don't use the built in mic for anything but a sync track, but using an external mic to lay sound onto the camera's sd card saves a lot of work and nail biting if you're making a documentary with hours and hours of footage to comb through. Plural eyes works, but one still needs to do a whole lot more media management going dual system. It's possible to get good audio with the 2.5mm jack. Until you've been out in the field for a week with little time for offloading let alone syncing it's hard to understand just how wonderful not doing dual system is.

Sorry I'm new, is there anything wrong "sound wise" with the one you linked? or just the fact that it sticks out and you're worried about it catching on something?

Also how can it 'hurt' I'm unfamiliar with any downsides to the converter other than lower quality if the gear is poor quality.

Yes using the plug that sticks out is a worry that i may knock it and damage the socket,the lead ones add an extra 3" and with the mic lead it adds up plus it is meant for head phones,
Peter there is no B & H in the uk and i can not find the gpm-467 anywhere ,incredably to puchase it from the usa the cheapest postage is $43,thank you for your help

Dang, I'd send you mine for free (if I haven't thrown it away), but I don't want to be responsible for ruining one of your videos. :D

I buy bottles of French booze from England, 3-in a box, FREE shipping, and it gets to Texas...on my doorstep...in like 3 days...delivered by the local post office. ;)
