GH5 using Ex Tele Conv in video mode

was wondering if the Extended tele mode was worth using, in documentary, when extra focal lenght might be needed

conclusion is that it is acceptable. of course, you got less detail, but when needed I think it is usable.

what do you think of it ? do you use it ?

I use it almost all the time for wildlife work. If my output is to HD in the end, I'll also use 2X digital zoom in 4K UHD in addition to ETC.

Ex Tele is a great option to have on the camera if one is ok with HD. You don't get the over sampling advantage of a larger sensor scaled down to HD but its still a very good looking mode to shoot with when you need the extra reach. Just be aware the results will be slightly softer vs shooting 4k and scaling to HD in post. Many don't consider that tiny bit of extra softness to be an issue at all so try it out and see if it works for you. Really if it looks good to you then it is good to use.

That's right flinty, it's the digial zoom feature that will loss detail.

I use ETC all the time in 4k with no loss in quality - it's a great feature for extending the reach of any lens. As I tend to like to shoot with longer focal lengths and hate the wide angle look I generaly have it on all the time.

ETC is great and digital zoom x2 is not as bad as people would think if your delivering to web. Shooting 4K and using digital zoom x2 is a life saver

I'm a documentary shooter who shoots a lot in a day so 4K is out of the way for me as it would need to much SD cards and would be ridiculously expensive in hard drives

when using ETC in HD, does it still crops 'safely' in the 4K sensor or does it crops in the HD image ?

I did a quick test and when set in 4K, ETC does nothing for me, but I read its supposed to crop 1,4x !
On and off, no change for me
in HD it works well !

Are you using a GH5 or GH5s? It doesn't work with 4k with the GH5s.

It has some other benefits over the GH5 but i would not change,losing 4K ETC would be a big hit for me.

Not quite sure if this is what you mean but the GH5s has a lower resolution sensor, so there is less to draw upon for the uprezzing or cropping.

The GH5S is using the full sensor, pixel for pixel just like ETC already. The GH5 on the other hand has a 5184 pixel wide sensor that zooms in 1.4x when going to ETC / pixel for pixel mode at 3860 wide UHD. Losing this crop is the only reason I'm not interested in the GH5S.

related: On the GH4, ETC does nothing in 4K modes, but is great in HD. Digital 2x in 4k mode looks 97% perfect, just eye balling it. (have not tested on test patterns yet)

+1...This is one of the really big benefits of the GH5 over the S...it effectively every prime into 2 lenses without loss of quality...though a little discussed issue, it's one of the biggest features in the camera for me!
