using DVX instead of a tape deck

Hello,

So every question I've ever had has been found after extensive searches on this board and on creative cow, but I can't seem to find a definite answer to this one. Hence the n00b status.

I'm digitizing about 40+ tapes without using a deck. I've just been using the DVX100b I captured everything on. My question is this: should I be using a cheaper DV cam to capture all the footage? I'm assuming there is no real difference, provided the cheapie DV camcorder is good enough to play the kind of tape (which I'm certain it would, since I'm just using PQ tapes and would be capturing on a Sony HDR-HC1)

I've read that capturing may damage the DVX, and I've also read that the DVX can handle it as long as I'm not constantly rewinding/forwarding. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I will just wear it out after awhile just like anything else. Just get her serviced at 2000 hours. I have quite a bit of work on my dvxb and captured all of it on it and still only have about 40 hours on the heads. You will be fine, just as long as you are not changing brands.

Get a cheap dv cam for that! You'll even feel better throughout the day knowing you are saving hours of use from your DVX heads.

Yes its better to use a small crappcam or a DV deck but no its not going to kill your DVX if you use it to capture. Just, make a capture camera a high priority piece of gear. And definetly try to refrain from shuttling with your DVX.

Contrary to popular belief, a dvx can handle a little capturing. I mean would Panasonic manufacture a 3000 dollar camera that can't handle a little playback? However, using your dvx to capture extensively is creating unnecessary wear and tear on its heads, so why not use a cheap, simple solution like a one chip consumer cam as a deck? If you do choose to capture on a dvx, do so in moderation, for the sake of your dvx's lifespan.

*Really dumb question alert*

If you use a cheap camera as your tape deck, will that affect footage shot in 24p?

*end really dumb question alert*

I'm curious then, what are the advantages of using a tape deck when I can just use a cheap DV camera? Tape decks are quite pricey.

:D Dory!

My theory on the deck over the Cheap dv cam is reliability. I'm on my third Cheap DV cam for the past 5 years.
