Using capitals letters.

I've noticed that more and more people who send text messages, emails and possibly post here have long forgotten the art of capital letters.

For those of you who fall into this category, please take note of the following statement:

"Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse."

Is everybody clear on that?

Cheers.

ps: no rude replies thank you, this is serious.

You dont understand how much of a pain in the ass it is to do caps (or anything else for that matter) on a phone keypad. It took me half an hour to type this.

What kind of phone are you on that, that took half a hour to post? Non-touch screen? By the way this took a matter of 1 minute to post.

Let us not forget commas. They define the difference between:

Is it time to eat, Grandma?

and

Is it time to eat Grandma?

Well, my Grandma hated to see any leftover food wasted or thrown out, so she probably wouldn't have minded if we'd have all eaten her. As long as there weren't leftovers.

I was exaggerating. But it is really annoying capitalizing on a phone keypad. Texting in general I would say is just about as informal as you can get, and short of grammatical confusion, I don't capitalize or use punctuation. I'm just trying to get a message out to someone about something. Email is situational. Contacting a potential client for the first time? Proper punctuation all the way. Making dumb jokes or emailing friends? Anything goes.

No rude replies? This is serious? But you put in some joke about giving hand release to a horse. Talk about a double standard.

I say do what feels good….as long as no farm animals are harmed.

I remember a character in the novel Microserfs theorized the elimination of capital letters from writing, due to the ease of…not using them.

Not on the iPhone. You hit the up arrow twice (after enabling caps lock in your settings) and type away. Pretty simple. That's the only phone I can attest to, though.

Android basically does the same thing. Android it's enabled by default, and you hit an up arrow to the left side of the screen once (basically a shift key). When you start a paragraph, or insert a period (new sentence), it automatically caps the first letter after that point.

2007-ish it was teh thing only typing small letters in combination of lack of smileys to show that you're mature enough not to use smileys, and self-distance enough not to "bother" with capitals.

You know I only just noticed that there's an S&G error in the title. Two, actually, if you count the fact that the title should be capitalized. <non-smiley>

sonovabitch. Dvxuser changed my all caps post to normal. :embarasse
but... It didn't only change all your caps, it also corrected so the first letter of every sentence was a cap.

Which means if you're lazy you could just cap everything on dvxuser and have it worked out automatically.

Btw this entire post (except your quote) was all written in all caps.

omfg that's awesome. :)

EDIT: Apparently, it doesn't like when you start your sentence with a non-word.
