Use of Leica/Panasonic 14-50mm (f2.8-3.5) on GH1/13

Greetings,

I would like to make forum users aware of a problem I recently encountered.

Quick bio- I am an experimental film maker studying for a masters in Interactive Media (England) and have been monitoring this forum for months regarding the GH13. I have a background in film production and digital media production. I have also sold pro photographic equipment as a part-time job since DSLR's first hit. I generally use 720@50fps (PAL) as I'm not trying to conform to cinematic iconography and appreciate the extra frames.

I have various Nikon prime lenses that I use on my GH1 but was searching for that somewhat enigmatic beast- a relatively fast, wide zoom lens for many occasions. I never bought the kit lens as I enjoy shooting ambient light and it is quite slow by all accounts.

So...I decided to purchase the Leica (4/3) 14-50mm (f.2.8-3.5). The DMW-MA1 adapter I required (I wished to use the aperture ring on the lens in question and the GH1 to recognize aperture values) was a ridiculous price, cheapest online I could find was £140. So I went for the Olympus 4/3 to m 4/3 adapter which a local camera shop split from a kit and it cost be £70 (new). The adapter worked perfectly and registered with the lens without fault giving correct aperture readings, OIS etc.

After testing the lens I found a grave problem. With the camera on sticks, stationary (and handheld) I noticed that whenever I would pull focus the actual frame would zoom in and back. Now I know what image shift is and this was actual mini crash zooms every time I pulled. Obviously the ability to pull focus over a shallow d.o.f. is one of the big draws of VSLR's such as the GH1.

I couldn't resolve the problem and had a limited time to return the lens and adapter so I did so and now its gone. This problem was a real shame as it personally crippled the use of the lens for film-making which is unfortunate as the glass was fantastic on the camera.

There is one reference to this problem I have found on this forum (nothing much on google/youtube/vimeo etc. I could see) however the English used to describe the problem is not readily understandable. So I thought I would highlight the issue and give users a heads up.

If anyone knows of any other threads/a fix then please let me know. Regards.

There is no fix, I used to have this lens.

Don't use the Leica for video. Use the Olympus 14-54 MK II. It is a better choice, no breathing when focusing. You have single shot autofocus. Period.

A real shame to be sure, my personal opinion is that Leica glass (designed, overseen and glass used from Leica and assembled in Panasonic factory, apparently) is superior to Olympus. I think it is important to be made clear that this problem exists so that other forum users might be aware and possibly devise a fix? Crystal clear 28-100mm (f.2.8-3.5) is pretty sweet 8)

I have posted an example of the problem on youtube for anyone else to view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjC78UHv47w

Well quite a few thread have been posted here about that lense, and me and someone else who owned the lens and sold it for the Olympus, and never looked back.

Looks like a decent lens (but I'll always prefer Leica!). I prefer to use primes anyway so I sold it and bought the Pan 20mm f.1.7 to complete my set (24mm to 200mm, average min aperture f.2), what a fantastic piece of engineering! Well thanks for the info and the proof of the problem is on the youtube link so others can see if they wish.

does this lens require an adapter to work with the GH1? Does AF work for photo as well as video? i.e - do you have the same controls as you would on the 14-140 stock lens?
