Greetings,
I would like to make forum users aware of a problem I recently encountered.
Quick bio- I am an experimental film maker studying for a masters in Interactive Media (England) and have been monitoring this forum for months regarding the GH13. I have a background in film production and digital media production. I have also sold pro photographic equipment as a part-time job since DSLR's first hit. I generally use 720@50fps (PAL) as I'm not trying to conform to cinematic iconography and appreciate the extra frames.
I have various Nikon prime lenses that I use on my GH1 but was searching for that somewhat enigmatic beast- a relatively fast, wide zoom lens for many occasions. I never bought the kit lens as I enjoy shooting ambient light and it is quite slow by all accounts.
So...I decided to purchase the Leica (4/3) 14-50mm (f.2.8-3.5). The DMW-MA1 adapter I required (I wished to use the aperture ring on the lens in question and the GH1 to recognize aperture values) was a ridiculous price, cheapest online I could find was £140. So I went for the Olympus 4/3 to m 4/3 adapter which a local camera shop split from a kit and it cost be £70 (new). The adapter worked perfectly and registered with the lens without fault giving correct aperture readings, OIS etc.
After testing the lens I found a grave problem. With the camera on sticks, stationary (and handheld) I noticed that whenever I would pull focus the actual frame would zoom in and back. Now I know what image shift is and this was actual mini crash zooms every time I pulled. Obviously the ability to pull focus over a shallow d.o.f. is one of the big draws of VSLR's such as the GH1.
I couldn't resolve the problem and had a limited time to return the lens and adapter so I did so and now its gone. This problem was a real shame as it personally crippled the use of the lens for film-making which is unfortunate as the glass was fantastic on the camera.
There is one reference to this problem I have found on this forum (nothing much on google/youtube/vimeo etc. I could see) however the English used to describe the problem is not readily understandable. So I thought I would highlight the issue and give users a heads up.
If anyone knows of any other threads/a fix then please let me know. Regards.
