Is is possible to use an hdtv as field monitor while still displaying an image on the 7d's lcd? The whole idea is so that the director can see what I see.

No, on-camera LCD is turned off when using HDMI. The only thing you can is split the signal and use an eternal monitor with the camera for your reference.

I like the Canon LCD (with a loupe) enough that I rarely connect my Marshall to it, except for crane shots and rigs...

That said, with my Canon (and my HMC150, which i pretty much always have a monitor connected to, the LCD is terrible) I will sometimes run a hot shoe monitor and a 21" HDTV at the same time, and I've found cheap passive HDMI splitters work fine.

They don't work with my Matrox desktop gear however - I get a lot of display weirdness running two screens with a passive connecter - but on set, no problems.

so it's possible to stream what i'm shooting to 2 different external monitors and impossible to stream on the lcd and an external monitor?
