Usb 1.0

Hello all. I recently purchased an HVX, though it seems my only way of downloading the cards to a computer on set (without using the camera itself) is to use an old laptop of mine with a card slot. The problem with this laptop is that it only has USB 1.0. So I'm wondering if it would even be worth it to use this to download. I would be transferring all the files to an external hardrive attached to the laptop. My main concern is if anyone knows the approx. download times I would be dealing with on a full 16gb card. If it turns out that the cards take longer to download than they do to fill up, then this would obviously be an issue for me. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve transfer speeds that'd be greatly appreciated, since I really don't want to go out and buy a crappy cheap laptop to replace my current crappy cheap one.

Ouch- that would be really painful like 10-20 minutes per card or more. Get a new cheap machine.

I used to use an old laptop with only USB 1.1 to offload cards... I just bought a $30 Cardbus USB 2.0 card from Newegg. Much cheaper than a new notebook...

Forgive me if I'm wrong (I'm new to the whole Cardbus/PCMCIA thing), but that sounds like I'd end up using my card slot for the usb, which means that I then wouldn't have an open space for the P2 card. I would have no problem with finding a solution using the camera itself to offload the footage, but I'd like to continue to shoot while the footage is offloading on the laptop. That's why I bought a spare card. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my original post.

I do like the idea of updating my usb to 2.0. If anyone knows of a solution that wouldn't require taking up my card slot, then that'd be fantastic. I kinda doubt it though.

Ohhh. You only have the one slot. Nevermind. Most notebooks tend to have two Cardbus slots, so I figured you could use the top slot for the USB card, and use the second slot for the P2 card.

Regardless, if you don't mind using the camera to offload, the USB 2.0 card would work for that purpose anyway.

Why not just offload using CardBus and forget about USB? Buy a huge internal drive ($110) and you can wait to do your transfer over the network when you get home.

Not a bad idea, though I'm not sure If I want to invest that much money into this laptop. It was refurbished to begin with, which was a bad idea, and I'm thinking I'll probably just wait and buy a new one when I have the money. I don't have a problem with using the camera to offload in the meantime, though it's kinda sad that I won't be able to use my 2 cards the way I intended till I get a new laptop. You'd think Panasonic would want to make the transfer process easier on us. Oh well, I still can't wait till my camera arrives tomorrow!

If anyone was wondering, when I did finally try transferring the files, it took something like 3 HOURS to transfer. I'm not sure exactly how long it took because I went to sleep after it got to 50% (90 minutes in), and the next morning it was done. The laptop I was using was pretty damn slow, but even still, that was ridiculous. Luckily I was able to find another laptop I could use with USB 2.0, so I'm good to go. Thanks again for everyone who replied.
