Upgrading to HVX

Hi, I am getting ready to upgrade to the HVX and recording to HD via the P2 cards. I was wondering what your suggestion are and what you all are using? I currently have a Mac PowerBook 1.5 GHz with FCP HD 4.5. I am thinking of upgrading to a PowerMac Two 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon tower or one of the new iMac with the lastest FCP. What monitors would be good to use, external hard drives and anything else you can suggest?

Thanks,

Bryan

MacWorld is in a week- might want to just wait and see what comes down the pipe. But if nothing new for FCP hardware what you want is good. Keep the Powerbook for your field ingest direct from the P2 cards.

Thanks Noah,

I will for sure wait and see what is announced at MacWorld. Would the iMac be enough of a machine to edit HD? What's your thoughts? I saw in your "Clip: P2 Field Workflow" you had a PowerBook with external monitors, is that what you use to edit with? Would my PowerBook okay with my current FCP for editing HD or with the newest version of FCP?

The Intel Mac are called MacPro, not PowerMacs.

No external hard drives for the MacPro. Get internal SATA drives because it comes with four slots and four drive carriers or caddys that easily go in and out.

4.5 will NOT work with p2 cards. You need at least 5.0.4 and that isn't available.

Plus FCP project files ARE NOT downward compatible. You can open 4.5 in later versions but not the reverse.

And the MacPro update is very overdue.

Faster bus and RAM, and beefier video cards. Same price for a faster machine, but I don't see much more to yahooooo about.

PCI slots are also faster.
