Update 60d Firmware directly from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9?

I also just successfully updated the Canon firmware directly from 1.0.5 -> 1.0.9, without any issues.

So A1ex, I should now be able to install the newest ML without any issues, right?

Can someone pleeeeease share the 1.0.9 firmware file with me?! I have a yousendit account that you could..... send it to. Puhhhhleeeaaase!!!! All I've got is 1.1.0!!!! and the ML version that is available for that is weeeeeeaaaak and unstable! :zombie_smiley::zombie_smiley:

????

What problems did you have with it? I hope you didn't try to run the 1.0.9 ML on 1.1.0 firmware.

could someone who actually is 100% sure of the answer please let me know this:

is there unstability in ML on the 60d if you upgrade directly from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9 and then install it? I accidentally went from 1.0.5 directly to 1.0.9 (which worked fine) but in the ML instructions it says I should have gone to 1.0.8 first. Is this ONLY because some people have had trouble going from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9 or is it the case that as long as I've done that successfully (which I have) I can now install ML without any fear of unreliability.

I use the camera for weddings so can't take any risks...

oh well. I guess I just wont install ML as I really don't want to risk it without getting the right information first and it seems the above question is now clear even on the magic lantern website from what I can see

There's no problem if you upgrade directly to 1.1.0 (meanwhile, ML was updated). I thought it could be a problem because it didn't work for me; but it was because I didn't format the card from the camera.

Right now, there's a small bug causing a crash on 60D if you press Play many times, very quickly. Fix was already released, but it wasn't thoroughly tested, so you may want to wait for a few days.

If you have problems, you can always bypass ML and run Canon firmware (hold shutter halfway at startup, or insert a card without ML).

thank you so much for your reply, that was very helpful.

Ok so just to confirm there is now a 1.1.0 version but possibly best to wait until another version is brought out to cure the pressing play multiple times bug?

Also do I need to install ML on each one of my SD cards if I intend on using a few of them over the course of a day?

also do you know what the "minor limitations" are relating to the iso and shutter on 60d? I'm looking at updating this week to use for a wedding on Sat.. just wanted to get answers to these couple of questions first..

Here is what the wiki says about the above:

Canon firmware may display wrong ISO in photo mode, and unusual values (like ISO 105 or so) may be refused. In practice, probably you won't even notice these.

For 60D I strongly recommend the bleeding edge: http://bit.ly/ml-aug28

i did a ctrl+f for bleeding edge on that page and can't find it at all.. could you clarify what it is? Also the one final question I still need to find an answer for is if I want to use 4 sd cards do I need ML installed on each or is it installed to the camera itself and not the card?

Look for "Download". There are no big fancy buttons (just a link). ML is installed on the card (read the install guide carefully).

installed and appears to be working fine! As long as its reliable this has changed the way I film!

love the focus assist while recording.. love the auto restart, love the no ACG, love the screen off option... don't fully understand all of the HDR/Photogaphy type settings!

Amazing :) Just have to remember to add it to each memory card every time after i format!

yeah I saw a couple of visual bugs.. a red zebra type patch in the top left corner regardless of what I point the camera at, and also white bars (almost like a barcode) accross the top left when I load default firmware by starting up with shutter half pushed. However thats no biggy as if this works and is reliable I can't see myself ever using the default firmware again! Thanks so much

ok so i went out and bought a 5d mkii today (I was that impressed with ML) and i'm struggling trying to work out which one to download.. is it AJ 5.9?

thanks a1ex. I'm surprised how different it is on the 5d. To be honest I don't like it anywhere near as much. Do the circles replace the focus assist on the 60d version? I loved that, especially the way you got the green border when in focus. I can't quite work out whether the 3 sizes of circles are actually to assist focus or something else but I can't seem to use them for focus.

I also get a LOT more graphical bugs like the stock battery icon appearing over ML displays etc. There seems to be a lot of that...

so yes.. very different experience! What am I not understanding...?

oh.. and just nocied that in order to start ML automatically every time I had to enable autoboot. I take it there is no issue with doing this on all CF cards I intend on using? Again just another thing I'm not sure about as this is not the way it works on the 60d

Very interesting to hear from someone who used both versions (there aren't many users who have both 5D2 and 550D/60D/600D).

The two versions are written by two different developers. Both versions have roots in Trammell's "classic" ML, which runs on 2.0.8. We exchange lots of ideas (me and AJ), but we have slightly different "philosophies" (for example, AJ is only interested in video, but my primary use for ML is for stills).

For graphical bugs... I didn't notice anything in Moira's video (but I didn't get a chance to play with AJ ML myself, simply because I don't have access to a 5D2).

Historically, when he introduced this version, it was a great improvement over what was at that time. Users were asking me if I plan to port AJ menus :) and there was a lot of buzz on blogs.

Then I've "copied" from AJ the false colors, magic circles (but I found it a bit difficult to make them round, so I left them squares), help line in menus... he copied from me the bitrate control...

If you follow ML development, we are still exchanging code and bringing the two versions closer (hopefully to the point of having a truly universal version). See for example http://bit.ly/aj-like .

So far, two users asked me to port the 550D/60D ML on 5D2 (one before AJ released his version, and another one week ago).

P.S. the stock battery icon appears over 60D ML graphics too :)
