Update 60d Firmware directly from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9?

Hi all, I would like to install Magic Lantern on my 60d. However, in the Magic Lantern installation instructions, it says for the 60d: "Upgrade [Canon] firmware to 1.0.9. If you have firmware 1.0.5, you must upgrade first to 1.0.8 and then to 1.0.9.

My 60d does indeed have 1.0.5 firmware. I looked on the Canon website, and they only have firmware version 1.0.9.

So, can I upgrade my Canon's firmware directly from 1.0.5 -> 1.0.9, and then install Magic Lantern 1.0.9?

Should be fine, if your going from 1.0.5 canon firmware to the latest it shouldn't be a problem because your only updating proven and tested firmware. A jump of like 2 versions shouldn't do anything.

Thanks. But will this be problematic for the ML install? Why do the ML installation instructions specifically say you need to go to 1.0.8 first?

Pookie, that's the problem - the ML instructions specifically say that I need to go to 1.0.8 first. I'm trying to find out if this is true; I don't even know where I'd get the Canon 60d 1.0.8 firmware because it's not available for download on Canon's website.

If this is like on the 550d, you can't go directly from 1.05 to 1.09, it's not possible, you need to upgrade first to the 1.08, and then upgrade to the last firmware.

After that, you can install ML.
I had made that for my 550d...

Thanks alfa. So the Canon 550d firmware will not allow a jump from 1.0.5 -> 1.0.9? But there is no mention of that for the 60d firmware, that I could find, anywhere on the Canon website. There is only the 1.0.9 firmware available for download.

So, assuming you CAN go directly from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9 on the 60d, Magic Lantern will install properly?

I'm very surprised nobody else has asked this question. (Or maybe I'm not looking in the right place.)

perhaps i'm wrong, but i remember to not have found the 1.08 firmware on canon site, only the 1.09 was there. So i've found the link for the 1.08 on the ML group site, as i remember.
so your problem now is to find the 1.08 firmware as you can't upgrade directly from 1.05 to 1.09, as described on the canon download page :

here in french : "Important: la version du firmware 1.0.9 est pour les caméras avec la version firmware 1.0.8...."
so : "important : the firmware version 1.09 is for cameras with 1.08 firmware, ..."

Actually on the Canon website it says:
"Firmware Version 1.0.9 is for cameras with Firmware up to Version 1.0.8. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.9, it is not necessary to update the firmware."

So by "up to" that would include 1.0.5, no? I find Canon's wording is a little ambiguous.

i don't think so, and the "important" word seems to be clear enough for me, but you can try...

just try !!! or follow the MLinstall steps...
in any case you could already have installed it by testing yourself, and if the upgrade does not work from 10.5 to 1.09, you'll know you have to install the 1.08.
it"s really quick to upgrade, so one more upgrade will not waste your day...

sorry for my bad english

Just to be clear, Canon does not offer their previous updates for download because they are obsolete and no longer needed- Each update is a complete firmware (not to be confused with a "patch" which merely updates part of a firmware). You can safely update to any version of the firmware as it will completely wipe out whatever was previously there.

Now, Magic Lantern is designed to use an exploit to enable a debugging mode. This is required to make it look to the storage card for additional instructions, which launches the software on top of your canon firmware. The thing about magic lantern is that it is designed to be compatible with only certain versions of firmware. In other words, if you have firmware 1.0.8, but running magic lantern for version 1.0.7, there will be a mismatch that can lead to serious problems.
I'm not up to date on the 60D side of things, but I'm not sure why you would be required to load one firmware before loading another- each one obliterates the previous from memory, as far as I know.

I would check with a1ex or ask in a Magic Lantern thread first.

Thank you M. Gliden. I have done exactly that - but no responses yet!

I'm still amazed that I'm the only one who is inquiring about this; if serious problems come from a mismatch, and the most current instructions from ML about proper ML installation actually don't seem to make sense... um, little help?

i follow the ML steps when i had done my upgrade, so 1.07 to 1.08 to 1.09, but effectively you can perhaps upgrade directly to the 1.09, i don't really know...but as i said, he can just try.

If serioius problems can result from doing it wrong, then no, I'd rather not just try!

i don't see why you will have problems if you follow the canon steps, it's really easy??
in fact, it seems you have 2 solutions :
upgrade directly from 1.05 to 1.09, and if it can't do it, it will let you know and i doubt it will brick your camera. if so, install the 1.08 first.
or upgrade by steps, 1.05<1.08<1.09...

and as far as i know you never installed ML on your 60d, so a conflict is impossible with the older version of Ml.

Well, there are 2 problems with doing this:
1. As we've been discussing, firmware 1.0.8 is apparently not available for the 60d.
2. Upgrading my firmware from 1.0.5 directly to 1.0.9 would ignore the specific instructions on how to install ML on the 60d. I'm not willing to do that.

I see, but i'm sure someone here will share the 1.08 firmware with you if you ask it.

Hope you'll join the ML users soon.

My 60D had firmware 1.0.5 and I couldn't upgrade it to 1.0.9 (camera froze at "Loading" and I had to take the battery out). It worked by installing 108 and then 109.

If you can upgrade from 105 to 109, that's fine, no need to worry. Just let me know, so I can update the install instructions.

i went from 1.0.5 to 1.0.9 without any issues last night on my 60d
