Understanding slow mo

What is the difference between shooting at 60p and slowing it down to 30p compared to using a software like twixtor? Just saving money, or better quality?

Better quality. When conforming 60p to 30p, frames are neither added nor deleted. Their value changes from 1/60 of a second to 1/30, meaning that 60 frames are still 60 frames, but become 2 seconds instead of 1.

Twixtor, in order to create slow-mo, has to invent new frames... a "best guess" of what happens between point A and point B. It won't always guess correctly, especially if there's a lot of detail. I'll try to find it (perhaps another member here knows the link), but there was a post on Vimeo recently displaying slow-mo from Twixtor to create roughly 1000fps. The subject is sliding into a large puddle. The water drops flying into the air are tell-tale signs of Twixtor's inaccuracy on "best guess."

Throw in the zero-rendering time for conforming vs. lots of time for Twixtor or LOTS AND LOTS of time for Timewarp... and the fact that you often have to try to manually retouch some bizarre artifact the software throws in.

60p slowmo is really pretty and natural, and fast. Of course it's not very "slow" and you can't do the ramping effects. Each has its place.

Is Twixtor much faster or better than timewarp (pixel motion)? I don't understand why everyone is paying $500 for a plugin that basically comes with After Effects...

My searching seems to support the idea that twixtor is markedly faster for render times. Supposedly it's more accurate as well - Timewarp gets confused easily by blurs and objects crossing over each other - you can get some funky artifacts.

I believe there's a downloadable test version, crippled in some way, might try it for yourself.
