Underrated flicks

Hook. Actually enjoyed very much that film. Underrated Spielberg film.
Starship Troopers- Brilliant film that still feels current in today's time. A brilliant analogy to intolerance and the mass fear histeria of our times.
Moulin Rouge!- One of my top 10 films of all time. hated by many, destroyed by critics.
My Blueberry Nights- Brilliant filmmaking, great soundtrack, absolutely stunning photography and performances. Not one of Wong Kar Wai's best scripts, though.

Be Kind Rewind- This film touches a personal chord in me. It really shows the heart and soul of making films, at least the ones I identify with.

Street Racer- Wacky film indeed, but get over the visuals and it was actually quite enjoyable.

Planet Terror- Loved every single minute of it. Can't wait for Machette!

I remain unashamed that I am intolerant of asteroid-flinging brain-sucking ugly-ass alien space bugs.

They can form a political-action committee and sue me.

:)

I also agree with AI. Another film on my top 10 favourite films. IMO, Spielberg's best. Mature storytelling. Now, about that ending, though...

"The Bedford Incident
Twilight's Last Gleaming
Fail Safe
Now get off my lawn."

Love it.

Now I'll go on a limb and say that the new Dawn of the Dead with Ving Rhames and Sarah Polley is possibly the best zombie movie ever made, and underrated by people who don't like the director. Watchmen, by same director, is also fantastic. We should all fail so badly.

It could be that I'm in love with Sarah Polley since No Such Thing (also underrated, or just unknown greatness).

Whether underrated or just plain unknown in the US, the Daywatch and Nightwatch films (Russia) should get a turn at the Multiplex, too.

Existenz was a mind-blower, and probably underrated, but I don't go around asking people these questions...

I'm a Sarah Polley fan (as actress and director) but the original Dawn of the Dead is still first in my affections...

I'm not sure whether or not Daywatch and Nightwatch are under-rated because while I enjoyed them well enough I'm not sure how to rate them, at all.

Seeing as how that was his first movie, and I didn't like it before he made any of his other movies I don't see how that is possible. I don't think it improved on the original, and I hated the garish, over saturated look of the movie. I don't think it's terrible, but I would actually say it's overrated.

Dawn of the Dead Remake:
"I don't think it improved on the original, and I hated the garish, over saturated look of the movie."

Have you actually watched the original version since? It does not hold up. The zombies look ridiculous. They're bright blue. The action is sloppy and not well thought out.

I'll take the new one.

I'll take the new look.

My affection for the original is not based exclusively upon its technical merits. And the blue-ness makes sense in light of the fact that a cyanotic body looks, well, blue (although maybe not quite *that* blue...). The bright neon-red blood impressed me as sillier...

I don't mean to suggest that the remake was bad - to me it worked all right as a sort of okay, here's what was going on in another mall in some other part of the country.

And the use of Johnny Cash's When the Man Comes Around over the opening credits was an absolutely brilliant choice of music.

They removed all the satire that made that story worth telling and just turned it into a story I'd seen a million times already. And the grittier look just gets under my skin more. The new one looks like a cartoon even if the zombie effects are more well done. The scariest part of the remake was the home video over the end credits.

Yeah. One is a horror movie pegged to social commentary.

The other was...a horror movie. Not a bad one but as Batutta observes it lacked the depth of the original.

And the Goblin score is still pretty freaky.

"Yeah. One is a horror movie pegged to social commentary."

You missed the social commentary in the new version completely? Both of you?

re: Reds

re: Reds

This won Best Picture, didn't it ?
It was nominated. Beatty won Best Director. But it didn't come out on dvd until a couple of years ago. It's one of my all-time favorites but for some reason very few people i talk to have seen it.

I'll agree to disagree on Dawn of the Dead. It certainly seems to qualify as "underrated," however.

Some other unknown / underrated flicks:

How to Get Ahead in Advertising
The Stoned Age
Idiocracy
Queen of the Damned
Bob Roberts

It's okay, I was just refuting the idea that dislike was based on a bias against the director. I quite enjoyed 300.

The Light Horsemen

Breaker Morant

The Beast

The Beast reminded me of another underrated Kevin Reynolds film, Fandango. It's a great little movie about fading youth that features my favorite Kevin Costner performance. Lots of great sequences as young Reynolds seemed drunk on the possibilities of filmmaking. Great early score by Alan Silvestri too.
