BTW does the F3 output 1080p60 and can the pix 240 record that?

1080i/60i, i believe so, and can even remove pulldown for you. but if you are talking about the 1080p/60p option that comes with the s log firmware, than no, you need dual link or 3g sdi to handle that kind of bandwidth. so for S-log purposes you'll only be recording log in 10 bit 422, and 60p in 720p over single link. but the pix has a built in hardware scaler that might do a decent to very good job of scaling the 720p to 1080p. From the 720p footage that's come across my table from the f3 from sxs alone, it's some of the best 720 I've seen, intercuts with the 1080 very well.

the screens are very useful, the marshal 5'' i use now is the same resolution and size as the ones built into the SD recorder or the samuri. Pretty useful to me.

Not when you use a real HD monitor of the same size range, you can't go back to one of those. I can check actual focus with a smallhd or TVlogic, you cant do that with the Marshal. I consider the recorders with a monitor (non HD) to be a gimmick and something to make the battery go down faster, which is a huge issue when you start using these things. Oh and do most of these things even exist yet? The PIX 240 may ship in July? I like what I can use now.

F3 ouptuts up to 60fps via SDI...
only the Gemini can handle this so far in the under 10.000.- price range....

had a chat with sounddevices: shipment will start in june to resellers and starting to customers in July...
but the really good thing about the 240: you can map the XLR'sof the pix to be recorded along with the
embedded sound of SDI/HDMI... So every F3/EX1/etc has 4 XLR-inputs!!!!

I think this is looking like The One. As much as i'd love to have 1080 50P (60P) slomo, I can't justify the price of the Gemini or Cinedeck. Or the data storage requirements. The first Australian 240 demo unit arrives next week and the production units not long after. The dealer said the factory was "going into overdrive" to satisfy the pre-orders.

For real?
no 1080p60 or 50 at 4.2.2. ???

The KiPro can handle 720p 60fps but may get an update to handle more.

What can the 240 handle? What kind of wattage is it pulling? Some specs seem to be missing.

This is from Sound Devices website:

Video Scalers

cross-convert.gif
Both the PIX 220 and PIX 240 offer powerful, hardware-based video scalers. Realtime conversion among video formats, including 1080i, 1080p, and 720p, are set with a simple menu selection. Conversion between interlaced and progressive, as well as frame rate conversion is available in realtime. For instance, some cameras set to record 24ps send 1080i 60 over HDMI or HD-SDI. PIX recorders can be set to convert the 1080i 60 stream back to 24p with no loss in quality.

  • Up/Down/Cross Conversion of 480i, 525i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
  • 3:2 Pull Down Removal to Record 24p from 60i Signal

Does this mean you could record 1080 60p on an F3 directly by upscaling in real time from the 720 60p coming over the sdi? How will this compare to real 1080 footage and is it any better or worse than just doing the conversion in post?

theoretically it's definitely possible. but it IS still 720p upscaled to 1080p. hardware scaling, should be pretty good, but you're not gaining any real resolution. and will still be softer than the native 1080 you are recording. there may be a possibility of artifacts too, but if it's a good solid hardware scaler in it, the image should just look softer and noisier than the 1080 output. might be marginal, might be a lot, depends on the person looking at it. Out of an F3 in particular though, i think the 720 on the SxS alone cuts and upscales with the 1080p really well.

I guess my question is , is there any advantage to this method as opposed to just handling in post?

in my experience hardware scaling does a better job, plus out of an f3, you might be able to do s-log at 720p 422, upscaled, and in 10 bit. saves you post time in rendering, and you gain 10 bit log out of it. (this is theoretical of course, without the firmware update, there is no telling if the camera will even let you do that. For all i know sony will lock that out)

720p upscaled to 1080p is a no way -for me-, even at hardware scale.
At this time i cannot confirm but seems that the cinemartin 3k base model will have a future hardware upgrade to hdmi 1080p60

For the people buying the pix240, why did they rejected the samurai thar does the same thing for almost half the price?

I think both these recorders will have a lot of things going for them. For me the positives for the pix240 over Samurai apart from : Physical buttons, scaling, audio inputs, timecode gen, and option for DN xHD is playback through SDI (Samurai is only loop through). So many times I want to check a shot on a large monitor to make sure I've got it. The negatives in relation to Samurai are size, weight, price and not getting a case with accessories! I really hope that they are both successful.

I was told by Atomos that samurai sdi was only loop through and not active on playback. If I am wrong please correct me. Sound devices confirmed to me that pix 240 playbacks through SDI.

Plus SD products are built like a tank and have a great history of excellent customer support.

Also, being able to also record avid DNxHD files is an added bonus.
