UK Price for RED ONE?

$17,500

Hopefully it can be rated by EU customs as a digital still camera, so we can get around that dreadful camcorder tax....

One would think $17,500 US dollars. plus S&H tax and so on. far as other countries? Would it not be based on the current exchange rate at the time of purchase?

Currently $17500 =£9307. The add to that 17.5% VAT plus import duty. £10,935 plus import duty.

Cheaper to fly out and pick it up, and pray customs don't notice you sneeking it in! ;)

the import duty is something around 10 and 15%, am i correct? I will try to avoid a direct shipment even if it means i cannot imput the cost of the camera on the company balance.

This was discussed in a previous post. The conclusion I came to, and whether others agree is another matter, is this:

Start a company (Rental or Production or whatever, be legit though). Register for VAT. Claim VAT back on the camera and if you buy any extras too.

Duty tax will most likely be 3.7% (Click here to check for import duty tariffs) Most likely Taric code is this one: 9007190000.

If this was correct then you would be looking at £ 9,272.60 (Currently according to Oanda, but this fluctuates so expect £9,400 as a fairly firm figure to work with). 3.7% of £9400 is £347.8 (call it £350).

Expect to pay roughly £9750 for the camera body in that case. Of course depending on how well the pound does against the dollar this could go up or possibly down. Forecast suggested a couple of months ago that within months you could be seeing $2 to the pound so as it stands it is likely to be slightly cheaper than that. To be on the safe side though I would say £10,000 was a good figure because you might find you have to pay fees to import agents etc and they can be a couple hundred £'s. Work around that figure and you should be ok.

I couldn't begin to tell you anything about the legalities of collecting the thing yourself though. Declaring it would incur the taxes but again you could claim them back as a business. If you didn't declare it and tried to put it through as an expense, customs and excise would ask a few questions over such a large offshore payment being made. Personally I'd go the legit way everytime, hope that helps :)

UK Get Together

Talking of UK prices, if any of you UK-based (future) Red owners are interested in meeting up, could you PM me? A couple of us are trying to arrange a get-together to talk about future plans re. rentals etc. Could also be useful to discuss importing options and how to handle customs :)

Years ago flew over to New York to pickup a Media100 board and spent a fun weekend in the big Apple.

Having phone customs before my trip I made sure I had the right codes and know what to expect going through customs on my return. They told me that I need to give the code to the customs officer and everything will be taking care of.

Standing at the "Something to Declare" office I smiled and gave the officer the code and mentioned that I had called in advance.

He smiled back and said I needed to fill out a form and they was a 300 page guide book to help me - he would not give me any assistance and if I wanted I could call an agent and pay £200 for some dude to fill the form out for me. And all this for something that had not duty to be paid as it was a computer component.

All I can say is this was a complete nightmare and one I will never repeat again. Next time I will walk through the "Nothing to declare" gate.

This is of course my experience and I'm sure other people have had no problems with customs. From what I've learnt they are in partnership with the agents who charge for filling out a form.
