GH4 UHD 4K HDMI Out To Shogun Recorder Coming Soon

Looks like Atomos and Panasonic are working out issues with the GH4 and 4K UHD plus some other things too. Check out this thread on the Atomos forum.

Two very positive quotes.

"Atomos has a close relationship with Panasonic, Canon, Nikon and Sony. We share our roadmap and in turn they do with us. The Japanese camera manufactures create cameras with amazing sensors that allow us to capture the highest level of video from their sensors which is our focus at Atomos.

An example of these strong relationships, we announced the Shogun at the request Sony to launch along side the global release of the A7s. The Shogun will unlock the full potential of the A7s.

For Shogun, we are targeting two cameras as our show pieces: The Sony A7s and the Panasonic GH4.

Atomos have made a commitment to ensure that both of the cameras have the best user experiences with the highest possible video quality that can’t be matched.

We can confirm that we are working with Panasonic so that the GH4 will capture at 4K UHD, 10-bit 24/25/30p ProRes into the Shogun with an announcement expected in the future.

Panasonic and Atomos will continue ensure that these two products are incredible devices that will continue to give you the best professional solution.

"Just an update on this, we are hoping to see the GH4 HDMI firmware release from Panasonic around one of the upcoming trade shows"

I read "4K UHD" in the Atomos notice. That says to me 3840x2160, not 4096x2160. The GH4 can shoot "true 4K" at 4096x2160.

Convergent Design intends to fully support all formats from the GH4, including true 4K, aka Cinema 4K.

Sorry Mitch. Unless CD changes their subscription codec and adopts conventional storage...The Odyssey will miss the mark for most of the 4k or 4k UHD market. We have the Sony FS700, the Sony AS7 and Panny GH4 and would have loved to consider CD....

Recording from the Sony A7s and the GH4 would be no additional cost. Recording utilizing the RAW signal particular to only the FS700 requires a one-time additional purchase of the FS700 record option, which is US $795. It is only for this camera so therefore owners of other cameras do not have to pay extra for its inclusion in their monitor-recorders. It turns the FS700 into a far more powerful camera than it is without it, but if you only need a monitor-recorder for the other cameras then there is no additional cost.

As for the media, by using Convergent Design SSDs you get three distinct advantages:
1 - We test and verify every SSD to work with the Odyssey. There is a full and generous warranty included.
2 - Our SSDs will fully handle the required read/write speeds necessary for the high data loads of 4K video. This is a major point that should not be overlooked. Many brands of media list specs for read/write speeds that are "best case" scenarios, usually when drives are brand new and empty. Fill a drive to more than 50% of capacity and it's speed will slow down considerably. Use a drive 500 times and its speed will slow down considerably. Our SSDs are guaranteed to maintain their read/write speeds throughout their lifespan, which is considerable. We have thousands of Odyssey SSDs in the field and only two failures, one of which came by someone dropping the item from a substantial height. That is an unprecedented reliability rate for media.
3 - Odyssey SSDs have a built in power save mode. If power to the Odyssey7Q is lost during recording, or if somehow someone is crazy enough to physically remove the SSD in the middle of a recording, the SSD will detect the loss of power and temporailly close the file on the drive. When the SSD is re-inserted in the Odyssey7Q or the 7Q is repowered, the system will perform an automatic recover process and rescue all of the files. On other recorders the recorded file could easily be corrupted. In fact the entire drive could very well be corrupted and ALL FILES PERMANENTLY LOST. I have seen this happen on some of our competitors' devices. We are all about protecting your recordings -- it's sorta the whole point.

Thanks for joining the conversation. Is CD working on HDMI start and stop protocol? I think this also a big deal at least for me.

As much as I would love to get the Shogun I can't justify the price. I hope other 4k recorders come out that will force the price down.

EriK, you mentioned on another thread that the GH4 didn't have clean output through HDMI, is this true? If so is it being considered or are we stuck with the yagh for shogun link?

I dont know the answer. I'm going on what others have experienced since we are on the cutting edge here. I hope Atomos and Convergent Design can give us what we want from the GH4 4K but we have to wait and see.

Hi Mitch,
Does the Q7 support hdmi 4K recording now? I have both Gh4 and FZ1000, will FZ1000( or may be LX8) be supported?

Hope the price of your SSD can go down a bit though.

Thanks, is very good product you have here

Currently the Odyssey7Q can only record a select few 4K RAW signals (C500 and FS700).

In the near future it will be able to record 4K video in a popular compressed format. When that happens it will be able to accept that signal as video or converted from those RAW signals.

The Odyssey7Q is hardware-limited to HDMI 1.4a, which gives a maximum signal throughout of 1080p30. It cannot support 1080p60 or 4K of any kind.

However, we are committed to supporting those signals in the future and will offer a path for anyone with an Odyssey7Q. When this is ready we will explain in further detail.

According to the HDMI.org website, HDMI 1.4a should support UHD at 24/25/30fps and DCI 4k at 24fps. Is it just the case that the 7Q's implementation is limited to 1080p30?

I will check to see if I have the part or item wrong, but I can tell you for a fact that the HDMI input is hardware-limited to 1080p30. We will support 1080p/60, true 4K and other higher data rates in the future and we are commited to offering a path to owners of the Odyssey7Q for full support.
