Uh Oh. Samsung NX1 Test Video

The epic is not fantastic. It is kind of epic, but not fantastic. The Arri Alexa XT is kind of fantastic but not in the shadows, not a fan of that. Or how it handles tungsten lighting environments. The Red Epic's dynamic range is around 12 stops usuable and has poor highlight rolloff and not good trying to get saturation. The Alexa is much better at handling saturation in a fantastic way. I just wanted to clear that up. :)

Your right the Alexa is fantastic. I have never had any issues getting amazing images out of the Epic. By most standards, it's fantastic. I'm not going to waste time with technobabble as I need to crash for the night. I can say, the Alexa and Epic are both different, and both great. I have no problem bringing in either and shooting with confidence.

I do. If I bring an Epic to a shoot where highlight rolloff and saturation are needed - then I failed.
If I bring a Alexa to a shoot where I need to move quickly, run and gun, then I failed.

I am not going to waste any more time with your "fantastic" word games. I need results and I need test charts. Not synonyms. I have way too many of those, thank you.

Ha! I'll take that. You are a champion. Man...this is a hot topic for you I can see. I'm sure your great at what you do and I am loving where I am at in my field as well. This is where I leave the convo with this type of response. Good day.

EDIT: You just gave me a sideways complement :) I play fantastic word games. My wife would agree, I'm pretty damn good at Scabble and the occasional crossword puzzle.

I apologize to the other readers for this thread taking a deviation from the NX1. Somehow an Epic and Alexa got brought up in this thread and we all know those cameras are in a different class from the NX1.

To bring the thread back...here is a generic video about focus separation on the NX1.

here's my first test film regraded - raised blacks. Reconverted properily in Wondershare. Thanks to all your feedback:

Downloading 1080 verson from vimeo. I wonder if I log into vimeo if I am able to download a larger file size copy of [Uh oh].

So what happens if you try to edit h265 directly in FCP or Premiere? Sluggish?

Also, if I buy say a 20mm Samsung prime, is the field of view the same as the 20mm pancake on GH4? Like micro 4/3?

You cannot edit it in premiere or FCP yet.

Super 35mm (or crop sensor 1.5) compared to 2.2 of the GH4. Larger sensor.

I also shotted some NX1 foody and is so good. Is like musky music. Very great! Always happy now. Only troubel is sometimes aiiassy.

Hey Ed,
So you and Mark Petersen (Off Hollywood) have raved about the NX1. Something is going on, coming out of left field. How do the colors compare with the A7S? Low light capabilities? How does color on the human face compare with Epic MX? ML hacked 5DMk2? The firmware update will make it very interesting.

I don't think the new firmware has been released. I seem to recall someone having a test version, and there was a guy who did some capture to his own card at a Samsung event showing the new low-contrast profiles.

Very promising though - the fact that Samsung addressed the very first round of review issues - all of which were "just getting a feel for this camera" - stunned a lot of people. Releasing the SDK is huge (even though it's not the full camera architecture being opened up, apparently just control and monitoring) is, to me, a godzilla-sized game changer.

This seems to show a company that really gets it. The NX1 is their shot at the market hole caused by complacent & incremental DSLR development (and insanely overpriced glass), and they're out for the pro market. I'm hoping they keep rolling - the next couple years could get very interesting.

Particularly looking at Black Magic as the "forward thinking" camera maker for cinema-style video - yet the Ursa shipped with massive FPN issues, firmware and features have been a long, slow slog since the very first BMC - a company with Samsung's resources could really shake things up.

BM has a great attitude but (seemingly) not enough resources to push firmware development forward at a fast pace.

I'm not sure how much Samsung will open the NX1 to independent devs, but at least it should be getting things like custom cropmarks, live histogram and waveform, false color, etc, plus full control over button customization, all of which I'd love to have in my a7S.

Samsung as a DSLR maker vs. Nikon & Canon... I'm remembering all those years of Quark Xpress, and then suddenly... InDesign.

Complacent 500-lb gorilla with measley updates every few years that were often pretty expensive, and then we get a modern & full featured tool with stuff we didn't even imagine asking for. I don't want to see C&N go under or anything... I'm just tired of being disappointed every time Photokina rolls around...

the one thing about the original clip on page one. the rolling shutter jello is just unbearably bad. if that's addressed in the firmware update, great! if not. complete non-starter for my uses
