Two sisters at the beach on a cloudy day - 1st day with 7d

the red head is 25, the blonde is 22.

Then you maybe luckier than I thought. They are both very attractive but there's no way out of this. Its kind of like asking "when are you due?" and the answer is she isn't pregnant...:zombie_smiley: Sorry about that.

DOF is a function of available light, f-stop and shutter speed. Adjust any of the three and you change the depth of field. Since you had a fast lens and plenty of available light you had to increase the shutter speed to get the exposure right which creates a shallow DOF.

If you had a polarizer or ND filter, which reduces the amount of light through the lens, you could have kept your f-stop at 2.8 and used a slower shutter speed which would look more natural. Obviously the difference between still and video is motion, if you increase the shutter speed you change how the motion is recorded, in this clip there is virtually no motion blur so it looks excessively crisp. That's OK if that's what you want, but as a rule of thumb if you want a more "cinematic" look make your shutter speed twice the frame rate. If your shooting 24 fps then make your shutter 1/50 [the 7D doesn't have a 1/48].

And for the record DOF is not affected by shutter speed. DOF is affected by type of lens (telephoto or wide), distance between objects and the Fstop.

If I have a locked down shot at F1.8 and its overexposed, and I have no way of getting proper exposure but to bump up the shutter...the DOF isn't goin to change...my iris is still at 1.8 giving me a nice shallow DOF. However if there is mivement in the shot then how objects move will be affected by the higher shutter speed.

Do you have kids? If you have.....as apposed to short fat and ugly children .

It's something you dont wish for your friends or foes :)....
I thought you meant somrthing else:bath: but I dont have kids yet.... and I see what you mean now Thanks Chuck .

Happy New Year to all BTW.

jambredz: yes, that was my understanding as well. Didn't think shutter speed affected DOF. thanks.

The absence of motion blur does make the footage appear sharper though...
Right..it does. I'm starting to think 1/60 is a happy medium for 24p when shooting "video." I understand 1/50 is closer to the 180 degree 1/48....but I dunno...film's 1/48 still looks different from video's 1/48 (IMO). At 1/60 you still have motion blur..but not quite as much.

Ah...what do I know..????

Quick question, if you locked down at F1.8 and you are still overexposed, can't you simply change the ISO until you have the proper exposure instead of changing the shutter speed?

I'm also new with the HDSLR so I might be missing something here.

What he said.

Best thing to do is get a fader nd (variable filter). It has from 2 to 9 stops of ND. So u can keep ur iris and shutter to what u want.

The Fader ND the Bloom recommends, the cheap ebay one, is a good one, I have it in the 77mm so it can be used with a step down ring and a variety of lenses. The only real problem is that at the maximum darkness setting it's a little darker in the left corner, not terribly, but I hear that happens with the Sighnhah Ray one too. It's a super good deal.

What does anybody know? What they've been taught to think?

I'm gonna play around with 1/180 and 1/240 and see what that looks like to me at 24 and even (dare I say it?) 29.97.

:-)

It's one thing to know why something is and then explore other options, it's another to have no idea (kid gloves here) and call others conformists, etc.

There're very good reasons why the 180 degree shutter is important. Of course, it's no different than choosing what stop to shoot at, white balance, and frame rate amongst other things: it's your choice.
