Most people plug the mic directly into the camera. The DVX has excellent audio properties. The key is to realize that the headphone output sounds a bit noisier than what's actually going to tape.
Yep, just keep your eyes on the meter!

Thanx fellas,I now can redo my budget.

That was awesome visually. Didn't care too much for the smoke, but it was better than most I've seen. The fantasy movie you linked to was awesome!

sorry, posted that before I even watched much of it. this was a really clever idea. Heat's an all time favorite of mine.

Great work with "Triage" I'm really impressed. You said you filmed in regular 4x3 mode with a matte for the black bars? What size did you output to? (It still has a widescreen look to it) And what format did you encode in? I know it's quicktime, but what codec? I'm asking because that's fantastic quality in my opinion.

Thanks again all!

Mastertee, the QT is 500x300, cropped from a 4x3 master so there wouldn't be too much matte. It's compressed with Sorenson 3, a really terrific encoder (and get the pro version, the quality is so much better). The data rate was 1500 kbits/sec, if I remember correctly, the end results being a 20 meg file - not too shabby. It gets some nasty artifacting about halfway through (as they're picking up the injured man) due to the quick movement and cuts.

I'd rather use the new H.264 from Apple, but not enough people have QT 7 installed yet. Has anybody seen the spectacular quality of the HD trailers??

Very impressive indeed! The audio is great - crisp dialogue, nice BG's, well mixed! dfinately a keeper. (Although I would have like to see more ...)

Slightly off topic, I can't view the "Ancanar" trailer. I hear the sound, and just see a white picture.

and yes I have Q7

Are you on a mac or pc?

I've never had a problem playing the QT clips on a mac as long as I had the latest version. But with the PC this latest beta version on QT7 seems to have intermittent problems. I haven't checked to see if they have a full working version of QT7 for the PC yet, as most of my time is spent on my mac's.

The cinematography was great. I'm curious about a few things...

Did you augment the lighting in the parking garage?

What F-stops on the camera were you primarily shooting at?

What kind of lights did you use? Any Kinos?

I thought the stuff in the elevator in parking garage and outside as they run looked especially great.

Thanks,
Jesse

Yeah, it's QT7 that is the problem I think. I watched it on another computer and it worked well.
So yeah... Good stuff though. Liked it.

JMG, we didn't end up using any extra lighting in the garage. The overhead flourescents provided plenty, and I kept the aperture fairly open. In the elevator, we had white bounce cards below the actors to fill them out. There we no lights used at all throughout - but photoflexes (white, gold and diffused) were implemented in almost every shot. We were lucky in the administration office, there were huge windows everywhere, so all we had to do was bounce it. Thankfully we had enough light (everywhere except the garage) to shoot at 1/250-500.

Looked really neat. With the music from heat, you could almost see this as a side story going on while Neal and his crew were shooting up the streets. Nicely done.

amazing, can't wait to see what you will bring to this month's fest. The last shot with the lady looks pretty much... hollywood.

good work. 24P or 24PA?
