Transparent Bars?

Hey,

I've just been looking at a film that was shot on the original DVX100.
Shiro's Head - The Legend

A shot of the view finder shows this:

Anyone know how they got the transparent framing bars top and bottom?

Cheers! :)

Looks like they used an LCD overlay to aid in framing the widescreen format.
There are a couple of brands out there...I make the Screen Skins overlay in 16x9, 1:85, and 2:35 for the DVX series (and other 3.5" LCD finders).
They should be available through Birns&Sawyer, EVS or Abel Cine in the Los Angeles area.
Hope this helps.

Tell me more of these Screen Skins you speak of :)

ScreenSkins are stick on framing guides.
They're cool.

I'm a cheap bastard, so I use 3M frosted tape.
Not as sexy as Skins- but it keeps me in the ball park.

i used to use nd gels over my screen to invisibally letterbox it, but then i started shooting in squeezed mode because its become an HD world out there, and i believe in 16:9

oh you have the original. i thought they all had squeeze mode. well i would just tape some nd gels over the screean, or use another clear thing and shoot in normal 4:3, then in post, you can convert your fotage to any aspect ratio, but you will loose some resolution, so maybe you will want to upconvert it in post.

Derkoi,
Screen Skins are simple framing guides that attach to your 3.5" flip out LCD finder on the DVX series camcorders. The top and bottom bars aid in composing a shot for wide screen, while shooting full 4:3 images. The appropriate letterboxing is done in post. The advantage of shooting full frame, is the ability to shift the image up or down a bit while editing so that you can "re-compose" for too much or too little headroom, etc.
The bars on the overlay are dark enough to let you concentrate on the clear center area, but you can still see an intruding microphone, etc at the top and bottom.
They are about $5.00 for a pack of 2 in USD available through the dealers mentioned above.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, i knew most of it, but i thank you for taking the time to post that information.

I'm from the UK and i can't find the screen skins on the websites. I don't fancy phoning the US, is there anywhere that stocks them in the uk?
