Transformers

Transformers...

why?!?

Well, if you were born around 1970 or later, you don't need to ask the question . . .

:cheesy:

As far as Porsche, they have become elitist, picking and choosing who gets the pleasure of using the Porsche likeness. I believe the newest Batman paid a bundle to use one.

Uh... so a bunch of you guys really believe this?

"I read an article about it so I would think its somewhat true."

An article where? Dudes... I know you guys from elsewhere on the forum... I've always liked and respected you... please... a voice of sanity on this issue... please! Porsche became elitist? That's like saying Rolex became elitist.

BTW... nobody pays to have cars in movies... unless it's the car company.

Porsche sells 100k vehicles per year... GM sells almost 5 million annually... that's 50 times more vehicles. If money wasn't an object then the transformers would have been more true to the original... why the heck wouldn't they be?

I REALLY REALLY wanted this movie to be good. The effects shots on the trailer were fantastic! My buddy was talking about the reviews stating how the movie stunk. That I shouldn't bother with the movie. I wanted to shove those reviews where the sun dont shine. I loved the begining with the helocopter. I was like YEAH BABY! Other than the cool effects shots (I have seen a dosen times in the trailers) EWWWW!!! The goofball comedy was over the top. This movie should be located in the comedy section of the video store when it comes out. It was definately geared towards children. Except for the boy trying to get some nookie from the "football player lovin skank".

Finally, some sanity on this board. Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but come on. I mean, a marine in the middle of a firefight calling in for help and being diverted to a Pakistani [tech support guy??] demanding a credit card? Is there anyone in the world who thinks this is funny?

A scene stolen right out of American Pie where the main character is thought to be masturbating by his mother??? All the while four 3-ton robots are dancing around in the backyard and nobody can see them??? This is what passes for humor and "good movies" these days?

Nobody has responded to my biggest problem with the movie yet. How did you like robots fighting that you couldn't see because the camera was moving so much? And would you have not liked it more if we had simply pulled back and watched the robots fight?

Spidey, I respect your opinions and I see that you are staunch supporter for this film, but wouldn't you admit that they could have done all of this a LOT better?? You yourself say you hate Michael Bay and yet despite this movie having every single Michael Bay ingredient in the film, you still like it? Why? What makes this different??

The same criticism was leveled for the fight scenes in Batman Begins. Some moviegoers did not like the fast cutting, hard to see fighting that Christopher Nolan envisioned. But it was the director's artistic vision. Same with Michael Bay. I think he wanted a dizzying, claustrophobic sense of the violence. It worked for me. There were plenty of scenes where you see the robots in wideangle.

We laughed our asses off at this. It just seemed like something likely to happen, much like being put on hold calling 911. "Which pocket?" "Left cheek! Left cheek!" Yeah, it did seem awkward and time consuming, but still funny.

You guys are taking this the wrong way. Let's take a tiny veer right and venture into the realm of writing:

What I've always been told, by more experienced writers, is that I can't do this kind of thing. Write something like Transformers, which is mostly glam and no grits, and get away with it. I went back to one of these people and told him to go and watch Transformers...

And his response was "I dunno how? I can't exactly wrap my head around why it works... but this movie was fun as hell." And of course, he's dislikes Michael Bay just like the rest of us.

Coming from a creative stand-point, a wanna-be writer and director, I am happy that Transformers is doing well. This pretty much tells me that I don't have to write the next Shawshank Redemption to get anywhere. I can write something fun and epic and still have the possibility of pawning it off as the next summer blockbuster hit.

Everyone's always talking about how Hollywood players don't have the balls to do something outrageous, I think Transformers entire approach was ballsy and it works.

Take it as a good thing. When has there ever been anything wrong with turning your brain off for a moment to enjoy what's pretty much a popcorn-no-thinking-needed movie?

I haven't seen the movie Kholi, but still be aware that Michael Bay can get away with pretty much whatever he wants. If you proposed directing the same script with some outrageous and balsy stuff in it, it's likely everyone in town would send you packing. But he makes so much money, I suspect to a large degree the studios just go with whatever he wants to do. He is one of the very few for whom that is true.

And I don't know who these writers are you're talking to, but the majority of films coming out of Hollywood all year long are all glam and no grits...

Most of the writers I congregate with around here are repped and I, personally, hold their opinions on the topic of screenwriting rather high; that's just me.

Either way, j00 d00 have the g00d points. I'd never personally try that, which was why I specifically mentioned writing... not directing.

It's just being able to write something fun and not outrageously complex, that was my point. Not directing.

Edit -- Oh and that's all just my opinion. Not fact or even put-forth as fact.

saw it last night. cheesy film. good for teens and pre-teens. The main character was not only poorly cast, but the idea of a high school kid taking us through the film was all wrong.

yeah i loved the camaro.

the smart blonde analyst was also poorly cast.

some pretty lame dialogue at times.

I enjoyed the look of the transformers, but the fight scenes were for the most part too tight. I would have liked more wide shots.

i should have waited for dvd on this, not worth my $10.25 plus hotdog and coke.

I'm not wasting a lot of time on this post. I say this aloud mostly to constrain myself.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people preface their posts with "I can't stand Michael Bay, but.."

"Michael Bay couldn't direct an ice cube melting but...."

Fellow dudes and dudettes.. I implore you- get over it. Just because his movies are the epitome of commercialized, spoon fed, in your face, dumbed down, ridiculously written, completely overstylized and prettied up crap does not make them less fun to watch. I know it hurts your sensibilities to find- to catch- yourself grinning in one of his movies. I know it's painful. I feel your pain. I'm right there with ya. But c'mon this movie was fun.

Could it have been a 100 times better with almost minimal rewriting? God's, yes! The sheer amount of blatant problems with continuity, or character development, or misplaced sequences.. the comedy relief, the bad acting never ceases to amaze. I too sit there groaning. Doesn't anyone involved at a high level EVER question any one piece of fluff as they're drawing it up?

Apparently not. But damnit, the movie was fun. It's fun to watch and fun to rip apart. That's the essence of Michael Bay flicks. We all know it, we just need to get over it, plunk down our money, and then laugh it off. Let it inspire if not incense you step up your own game. There is clearly MUCH greatness to be achieved if audiences are so easily pleased, and keep coming back for more. Imagine the possibilities. If nothing else flicks like this one lay out the formula for making seriously, truly, groundbreaking films that do pleasure us on all levels. I think his movies are very inspiring, not because of their greatness but for their ability to show us the true potential for greatness. If Michael Bay ever teams up with a serious writer who can keep the cheeze in check look out world.

The only things I that bothered me alittle was Star Screams voice like Staygettin said, and lack of self expression, and how close up on the robots they were during the fight scenes. I think when this movie goes to video more people will be disappointed about that fact. The voice should be simular to the cartoon. That is not alot to ask. They got Prime, Megatron, and Jazz's voice right on. I think Star Scream's voice should have sounded closer to the original. But regardless the movie was sick.

Chris Lotta (original voice of "Starscream") died years ago. They were going to get a voice impersonator but in the end they didn't feel right about it (or so I've heard).

That was also kind of an indirect rip on Three Kings, where Mark Whalberg find a cell phone in an iraqi bunker during a scene where he is held captive and calls his wife at home in the states.

Finally saw it. Didn't like it. (This will be a very sinthetic impression)

Didn't like:

Very, very bland characters. The girl lead was just for eye candy, pure and simple. And the character was written as "stereotypical teen sexy girl post Angelina Jolie/ lara croft era.

Lots of Forced plotting- Small example ( little spoiler) If something happened like what happened in the car sales slot, I would not buy that car!

Too much use of handheld and extreme close ups. The action was a bit of a blurry mess.

" Autobots, roll out" ! Cheesy

Product placement/ one giant commercial for GMC and american corporate brands in general/ excluding, of course, Nokia.

Melodramatic moments SPOILER

Like the slow motion girl and boy lead moments, or the backstory of the " captain" soldier.

Stereothipical human "bad guys"- FBI guy was a terrible joke.

"Dumb President analogy/joke". It is so commonly used nowadays, that its not funny anymore.

Story very forced, and too juvenile. Autobots could've solved the problem right after recovering the cube. And what about them always trying to hide? Just too ridiculous.

Liked

Self References to Bay's films- " This is going to be bigger than armaggedon"!

Voice acting of robots.

The old camaro bumblebee.. I don't know much about American muscle cars, but I do like the look of it. The new version, however, just looks like an 80'ies japanese car...

The robots themselves. Very well done.

Music... But then again, Linkin Park was excessively used, and sounded out of context. The Smashing Pumpkins are, once again, doing an Ending song for a mediocre film (Last one was a Batman film... A BAD Batman film...)

Sequel? Definetly will happen. DIfferent director/ sriptwriter? Sure hope so...

Get the Matrix brothers to do it!

That would just be silly... giant robots ducking bullets and wearing trench coats? I don't think I could stomach it ;)

News is out, Transformers will be excusively released on HD DVD, (sorry Bluray) along with all future releases from Paramount and Dreamworks. The tide is changing in the format wars. It will be interesting to see if one comes out on top, or if this feud will live on.

Maybe a new format will just barge in and destroy everything in it's path, kinda like Unicron.

(they better have Unicron in part 2 or 3 of the live movies)
