Transferring footage from powerbook to imac... how to?

I currently have a 15" powerbook in which I'm going to use for writing and for taking on filming segments to store my p2 contents (when I switch up cards).

My plan is to get an imac 24" to use primarily to store all footage and use Final Cut Pro for editing.

If I take my powerbook out to different locations and dump footage on to it, how do I then transfer the files to my imac? Can I hook up both to each other via firewire?

Sorry, I'm not really technical with this sort of stuff. I'm just trying to figure out the easiest way to transfer things without the possibility of losing anything along the way.

TIA,
Dale

Don't dump the footage onto your internal drive. That is an unwise decision. Dump the footage to a bus powered firewire drive. That way you can connect it to any computer to access the footage.

Is it safe to say I should be carrying around my powerbook AND a firewire external drive then, dump everything to the drive (powered by the powerbook) and then I can bring the files as I need them?

If so, this sounds like a much better option indeed and might solve another issue I have too, which is:

The imac was I looking at getting is $2100 as it's a 24" 3.06 GHz with 4GB of RAM. I liked it as well because it has 500 GB of storage space on the drive too. I'm working with Final Cut Pro and was under the impression I need this much power and RAM to make it work well.

Can I get away with the next model down, which is 2.8 GHz, RAM upgradable to 4GB and 320 GB hard drive. The difference in price is probably $400-$500 and I could use that extra $$$ for another p2 card.

What do you think?

Thanks for both of your replies too, much appreciated!

Absolutely. I used a 20" Imac from two years ago to edit and thought it was sluggish.
Bought a Macbook pro and had the same issues. Turned out the problem was an inadequate external drive . When I connected a good FW 800 drive all was fine, and would have been with the Imac. You do want to load it with max ram possible though.
(both machines edited great with the internal drive, even though that is not recommended)
