Trading in my Canon C200 for S1H

I'm thinking very seriously about trading in my C200 for an S1H. Mostly for the portability and size.

I think I'm going to miss the autofocus of the C200 but I'll gain some great features in the S1H that the C200 doesn't have.

Tell me why I'm crazy. Or right...

There are many people who know they can't live without AF...it sounds like you can in which the Panasonic has some other amazing features you'll enjoy.

Or you could get an A7SIII or S5 for even more portability/size.

What are your needs?

S5 is a strong option I'm considering. But I think 30 min record limit is a no-go. I do a lot of corporate work, interviews, b-roll, that type of thing. And I need something I don't have to babysit to hit record multiple times in the middle of an interview.

The S1H would be a B-Cam to a C300 Mark III. And hoping it would be the more portable alternative with equally good DR and recording options (to a point of course). And a lightweight gimbal cam.

My hope with this question is to get opinions from anyone who currently owns an S1H and may have also shot on the C200. What are your thoughts in how you used both cameras?

As a B Cam to the C300 III? C200 has the same clog2 clog3, same color gamuts, same RAW codec, similar AF controls... S1H has great image quality but why shoot yourself in the foot??

FWIW Liam Hall and Clermond are using the R5 as a B cam to their C500mk2 and C300mk3 respectively and they rave about how easily it matches. It seems they use it primarily in pixel-binned 4K mode and switch to a different camera if they need extensive 4K60p

I don't necessarily disagree with you. This may be the part where everyone tells me I'm crazy and I listen to the chorus of voices. But I do have a need for another hybrid, I shoot quite a few photos as well, and having a second body that can do that also is a big pull over the C200 at the moment.

Yeah, AF for video is kind of awesome in how it is increasing the democratization of cinema. It definitely opens up a cinematic element to people that might not have been able to create cinema reliably in the past.

Pretty exciting times. And luckily just in time for my aging eyes!!!

These two camera manufacturers have a pretty different look to my eyes, so I wouldn't want the headache of matching them if you do a lot of multicam. Since you need photos too, I would definitely lean more toward R5/6 and live with the lesser codecs for the extended run times and/or use an external recorder when you really need to let it run for a super long time. Those are situations where it would typically be on sticks anyway, right? So, a recorder is not a huge nuisance in that situation and it can still be stripped down for grabbing quick lightweight b-roll and photos.

I own an S1h and while I think it’s the most capable camera of its formfactor I wouldn’t use it as a b cam for a canon I would go with a canon solution to avoid matching problems.

This is an excellent point and something to consider. We do have a Ninja V as well, although I'd love to stop having to plug things into mirrorless cams. It is what it is I guess.

They’re such different cameras!

If you’re not shooting raw, imo get the S1H. I find the APS-C crop mode on the S1 better than .mp4 on the C200, or at least not too different.

I rarely use the raw for what I mostly do with the C200, which is using it as a b-cam during interviews with the C300 III. I need longer run times during those, recording anywhere from 2-4 hours in a full day. So having that much raw footage to store and go through is not what I'm looking for.

Any B-roll is typically shot on the C300 III. So I don't necessarily use the raw when picking up the "pretty" shots either. I have another camera for that.

So this is good feedback and helpful to hear. Thanks! I think I'm going to get a S1H in for rental and try using cinematch or just checking to see how closely I can get it to match with the C300 III in general.

Yeah I'd rent it and check it out. It's an impressive camera for sure.

On the other hand, does't the C70 have the same sensor as a C300 III and a high quality 10 bit mode? I like what Panasonic is doing, I prefer the EVA1 to the C200 and I like the S1 and S1H. But if you have a C300 III as an A cam a C70 seems the logical b camera.
