Torres Studios Show Reel '08

damn that is amazing.

i wish i could learn how to do those composites and mattes... would be soo great to know how.

Lots of really great stuff there. Beautiful mattes and cinematography. I love the lighting in the Junipero (I think?) shots. Looks like mostly natural light, but it's used to really great effect.

One suggestion though - depending on where you're showing this, I guess - I'd consider taking out the animation clips. The Bee Movie stuff kind of requires an explanation as to what exactly you worked on since it's a big studio film. For that matter it just doesn't gel with the only other animation piece you include which is really rough in comparison. The purple backwards leg people are pretty awkward (again, in comparison to everything else - I have no idea if that's for a short or a video game or what) and stick out like a sore thumb compared to all of the beautiful shots in the reel. It doesn't shine in terms of design or modeling or animation, so I think I'd leave it out.

Personally I'd make a separate animation reel.

Anyway, fantastic work. Those mattes are mind blowing.

You know Marlon,
I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but here goes. I am surprised at the use of "I am Lincoln" here. Let me explain what I mean. I have used this and many other songs and scores from movies in my wedding videos. I would have looked at this as a no no for a demo reel for cinematography and dp type work. Especially as it pertains to actually working in movies. I figure I am so far removed from the work where I am but in your situation and with intention of being a higher profile, I would have figured you would want to stay away from that type of thing, am I right? Just curious about that. Also I agree absolutely mind blowing work. I am so proud of that little A1. And I agree about the animation. Good stuff, glad to be in your company ( I mean as a Canon A1 user) good luck...
Bill

The animation stuff is gone guys, thanks for the feedback. As for "I am Lincoln"... didn't know it was that popular, the only other place ive heard was the "The Golden Age" trailer.

That was one of the best reels I've seen on this site. Not only were the shots amazing, the entire time I was thinking "I really wanna watch these movies."

That being said, can I watch these movies? lol
Are they for sale on DVD?

Marlon,
I hope I didn't indicate that I thought the track was overused. I was asking if for a demo reel it was acceptable to use a soundtrack from another film. I would figure that for someone who is soliciting work in whatever way from the film industry you would need either really killer buyout music (if there is such a thing) or someone to write you a piece. I'm not supporting or conding the use of it, just asking the question. Without pause I use copyrighted music in my videos all the time, but I'm not trying to get work in film, that's all. I was just curious if that's frowned on. I thought it was used to great effect here.

oh ok. I thought you were just politely saying that the track was overused, I guess I read it wrong. I don't think anyone will be suing me for using the song on my reel, its not like I'm asking people to pay for viewing it. Most reels, pro or amateur, "borrow" music from other sources. glad you liked the reel.

That's cool. I was just curious as I start to move outside of wedding work how much I need to be concerned about copyrighted music. If not, then that's very cool.

Actually, you need to be very concerned. Copyright violation is copyright violation whether you make money from it or not; you're always taking a risk when you use other people's work without permission. If you are sued, the argument "Everyone else is doing it!" aren't going to help you much. I've used copyrighted stuff before, of course, but only in "fun" projects that I don't ever intend to show to other people. I'm uncomfortable with presenting works with musics that I don't own, so I found someone to do it.

please point me in a good direction to learn how to insert composites / matte paintings!

so what.. you make something very high in resolution.. do you draw it from scratch or does it come from photos? then layer it up to make it look like it has depth? Then composite it with a garbage matte ? Gimme some simple steps here :)

Huy,
Can you imagine I do a video of a bride's wedding and have to use some crappy buyout music instead of her first dance because it's copyright infringement for me to record her dancing to it. Much less sync the video to the song. It's a moot argument. The wedding video business would go away. That isn't the point here. It has nothing to do with copyrights. I did not expect to see a show reel for a studio doing primarliy creative narrative work using a non original piece and it is intriguing to see that. That is all. I can't remember having seen a studio demo with a non original piece before that's all. I really like Marlon's work here and find this one aspect of it very interesting. sheesh.
