GH3 Took The GH3 Out For A Test Drive Today

What would most people want to download?

For me, there's no reason to download anything more than the original file spec. ProRes seems like overkill for the native files you're getting off the camera. Hell, even for the highest bitrate mode, AVC-Intra 100 should be enough at the most.

Apparently .MOV is using the full range of the file, which means it will clip highlights and shadows unless you bring them back in a 32-bit floating point program (like Premiere)...AVCHD stays within the clipping points though, so perhaps this is why AVCHD is looking better to people?

Keep in mind AVCHD should in theory be better because it is a lot more efficient then Intra formats which don't get the extra bitrate savings. the long gop structure is what really makes these formats shine at lower bitrates. While the 72mbit format may look very good I think the 50mbit AVCHD should look just as good if not slightly better due to its efficiency. One format may get more macro blocking but the other might get more DCT compression artifacts. Not saying the 72mbit mode will look bad just that I wouldn't assume it will look better then the 50mbit mode just because it has a higher bitrate.

Too bad they just didn't put AVC-Intra on the camera and said to hell with it. If it works on your SD card, great! If not, don't bother to call... :cheesy:

+1

It already is virtually the same thing minus slight bump in bitrate and 4:2:2. Once again that bizarre wall between the consumer and professional division.

Fantastic shoot Erik!!!! Finally someone who shoots with the camera and leaves to color in!!!!! I'm glad you left it on AVCHD. Although I'd like to see YOU shot with the all-I so we can see what the camera is capable of. You have a great location to test cameras!!!!
Now I'm really excited to get my camera. Should be late today or mid day tomorrow.

How are your thoughts about the camera build and IQ?

Holy crap! I just downloaded the file and played it back on my 47in. Passed with flying colors (get it). Looks rich and detailed. I want my camera now. Poop, now I'm forced to order the 35-100 and maybe another Gh3 for my low-profile 2 cam set up. Erik, was the sound recorded to just the camera??? It sounds great!

I didn't want to grade the footage and I labored over if I should tweak the profile but I decided to go stock in standard settings all set to 0. Naked truth. It can only get better from this starting point.

The camera feels really good. It's solid! Very comfy in the hand. With the GH2 I would activate a function button on accident all the time. Especially the four on the back. I didn't do this once while I as shooting with the GH3. Sweet! Every aspect of the camera's build is much improved. You won't be disappointed.
LCD screen is a big step up. OLED is bright and crisp. Viewfinder is better as well. I think Panasonic has a winner with the GH3. Now if they could just get the AF-200 going!!!!!!!

I used the Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone. I was impressed with the sound recorded direct into the camera. Thats a big deal. I need to test out my wireless lav and see how full it is. If it's as good as I think it will be kick the external audio device to the curb most of the time. I know the quality will always be better using an external device but for run and gun, On-Cams and interviews this will be a time saver!

YES! I just checked and mine will be here today.

All standard eh? Thats great because it looks great from what you've done. So far so good from what I'm seeing out of seasoned shooters (like you). I've been eyeing the C100, but held off for a bit and bought the Gh3 to see if it can get me through mid next year, where we might see more cameras coming (AF200 anybody). I've become used to M4/3's and kinda feel comfortable in it. It's a good balance between 2/3's and s35 for me.

Now we need to see some good Gh2 v Gh3 footy to see if they can match up or if we need to buy 2nd Gh3's :kali:

I'd be really surprised if we see another true AF100 model (the "A" being a slight refresh only) before this time next year. Which is a shame. Tweak the OLPF, along with the 10-bit SDI out and the "A" model would be worth a hard look.

Amazing, GH3 footage without jitters or bad aliasing or a constant battle with finding focus?

Seriously though, great job, first time I've actually been impressed with GH3 video. Everything really looked super crisp and colorful.

I'm not expecting to see it by next year. But I'm hoping to hear about it. So far, I think the Gh3 will do me justice until I decide to or not to jump on a C100 or C300(used. Saw one for $9000 on craigslist last week). The reason I', going gh3 is for true 1080/60p for some of my corporate work. I have a feeling eh Gh3 is going to suit me just fine...

One thing that annoys me is when people use the shots with focus hunting. Its okay to let people go in and out of the focus range just don't chase them. :)

I hate Erik Naso. Or rather, my bank account hates Erik Naso. I was set on getting the 12-35 lumix with the Gh3, and skipping the 35-100, because I figure for narrative work all I really need from zooms is the 12-35, which is a 24-70 equivalent - who needs more? Plus I have a ton of longer primes I can use with adapters - Nikkors (50, 85) and Rokinon (f/1.4 85mm) and Sigmas in Nikon mounts. Even though I kept hearing raves about the 35-100 - I kept thinking "but why do I need it for narrative work when I'll be rarely shooting over 35mm (70 equivalent) and the 12-35 is all the zoom I'll need". And now I saw Erik's footage with the deadly piece of info "90% shot with the 35-100"... ugh. I want that! Do I really now have to get it??!! My bank account screams NO! My fallback position is "it's not the lens, it's the man behind the lens and only Erik can get that kind of footage out of the 35-100, so I may as well skip it". Seriously though - fabulous footy, congrats Erik!
