Too Early?

I like the idea of character driven too.

BTW, Aram, I watch some of your films on your website -- Can You See Me Now??? -- I loved that one!

Not appropriate for this thread, but I'd love to hear more about the software you use for special effects.
Hey editphish, congrats on the 100 posts.
Thanks!!
Sure man, i can tell you how i did whatever you are interested in.

Thanks Aram,

Well, don't want to have this thread go too off-topic, so maybe later today I'll start a thread in the FX forum asking ya some questions

Noir would rock, or maybe a "one script to rule them all part deux: drama"

I wouldn't mind either of those. The single script stresses pure creativity, which is what the contest is about. Getting creative, using resources, going out and getting your film shot.

please god not romance

Sorry, you have forgotten to capitalize god, and thus you asked a less powerful deity for karmic assistance.

romance it is!

Romance would be pretty interesting... because, it could be a movie set in any time period, during any event, but have a romantic feel to it.

I think half the creativity is in the writing, and half is in the production. As long as the script is ambiguous, I'd be fine with it. It'd let us focus on our visual storytelling technique.

Editing, on the other hand, is pure evil science.

If it romance then I am going to try making something totally non-romantic romantic like 2 crackheads sharing a pipe or box to sleep on.

If it's romance I'm gonna tell a story of two cowboys in the mountains and the big twist is they turn out to be gay...

EDIT: Now that I've shared the idea with everyone I guess I can't do that... Might as well pass it along to Ang Lee. The movie will most likely suck anyways.

Horror, Sci-Fi, and Romantic Comedy. That would cover the major money-makers in the box-office today. Sounds reasonable to me, particularly since something character-driven would be a nice change. Romance separates the men from the boys.

nah, style over substance all the way.

I'm still pissed that I missed the last 'fest, so am superextraspecially looking forward to the next one.

I also agree with keeping the contest to broad categories. For example, Sci-Fi covers a very broad territory. You can have horror Sci-Fi (Alien), romantic Sci-Fi (Solaris), comedy Sci-Fi (MiB), etc...

Having such a wide scope will make the contest much more interesting for both the film-makers, and those unfortunate people who have to sit through all of them.

Noir would be good. Noir also has an emphasis on chiaroscuro lighting, which will be a challenge -- both during filming, AND pre-production. "But honey, I NEED that Arri fresnel kit for the DVXUser contest!"

how many festivals up to now?

how many festivals up to now?

how many festivals has the dvxuser site had up to now? What were the themes?

I think romance would be a definite change in pace, but I wonder how many individuals would opt not to submit due to the "subject matter of love".

I personally would love to try my hand at romance, but others might not be as eager to join those ranks on the board.

I had also mentioned before that "pulling from a selection or scene from one script provided by the moderators" idea would be neat. -at least allowing for some vastly different interpretations upon a base material.
