Tokina DX 11-16mm F2.8 II

What exactly makes the new one better than the old one? Exact details. The most important change would have been max aperture - now that makes a difference. But it's still f/2.8. The trend for new lenses is to get faster, including zooms - now moving into the f/2.0 territory. This is more of the old. Oh well. The other thing is DX. It would be nice is they moved to full frame. As is, it's still stuck with DX, meaning it'll be a single use lens for your m4/3 mounts or if you buy it in some other mount, you'll be limited to APS-C, and if you want to use it on one of those nice new full frame Nikon or Canon cams, you're out of luck. So I'm curious, if someone already has the 11-16, what's the incentive to buy the new one?

No way they are going to make this f2 or full frame, it would be a totally deferent beast and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Could you imagine a full frame 11-16mm lens.... even at F2.8 people would freak out if you made it F2 it would be the most amazing thing ever. I think you are talking about native m43 lens getting faster, I wish F2 zooms would happen but you are never going to see f2 zooms in the full frame world, it would be huge and cost a lot.

Back to the Tonkina-
It will have better coatings and they added an additional aspheric element. I would imagine better flare control and better performance wide open. I also am hoping for less distortion.

I already love the Tonkina as is, but it's easy to flare and is best at 14mm. Its already very good at 2.8 but it could be improved.

We will see if there is a big improvement or has made things worse, one has used this lens yet.

Well, I was kinda thinking either/or. Either 2.0 in a m4/3 mount, OR stay at 2.8 but go full frame. Because you get less distortion if you use full frame lenses on a smaller chip (because you are using just the central area of the lens, and so get less distortion). I gotta say, whatever they do with the new 11-16 is more like noodling at the margins, unless they do one of the two I mentioned. New coatings, extra element... yeah, well, in the big scheme of things I suspect it ain't gonna be much. Of course, we gotta wait until it's out in the wild and people can test it and make up their own minds.

I would love this in a m43 mount because then f2 becomes possible. The panny X 12-35mm that is due out in the future might be the answer but I don't have the time to wait.

My dream lens is a 12mm F1.4 in m43, I would pay 2k for that - I do expect that they will make it at some point. Until then its the Tonkina for me.

No way! There's plenty of UWA for full frame...this lens alone pretty much seals the coffin for those of us who don't like full frame to begin with. With DX you get extra telephoto reach, and because this awesome lens exists, we can have our cake and eat it too. Best of both worlds.

I do agree but a UW on a FF camera will have a deferent look then on a DX. Its a little bit more then just FOV vs FOV as there is a deference in DOF as well.
note: (if you were able to follow along on that sentence you are a camera nerd , in a way I am just talking about it to drop as many acronyms as I can)

The good news is that you can already use the Tonkina on a FF camera but it's only good from 15-16mm.

I'll be investing in a GH2 pretty soon and I wanted to know if this would be the best affordable wide lens to match with the Sigma 30mm 1.4? I've been teetering between buying the GH2 14-140mm kit with the Sigma, or buying the GH2 body and investing in this Tokina lens with the Sigma (I'm thinking I won't need a telephoto lens since I can use the crop feature on the GH2).
