Tokina 16-50 vs Tamron 17-50

It depends on if you want Image Stabilization. This is an option with the Tamron (VC version), but not with the Tokina. If you shoot a lot of hend held and don't have the proper rig, this would help quite a bit.

Hi Mike, thanks for your input. Would the VC matter much if most of the time I am on a monopod or tripod?

Hi psykohed! I have read complaints about the VC and autofocus being noisy on the Tamron. What is your personal experience? Should I be concerned ..is it noise that will be recorded while filming?

Most photo stores will carry both of these lenses, best thing to do would be to take your 7D and try them both. Yes Tamron VC autofocus loud noise will be recorded, but assuming it is "strictly for shooting wedding videos" you wont be relying on its audio anyway.(You wouldnt be relying on autofocus either as it changes exposure)
VC is more for still photographers, it gives them an opportunity to use few extra lower shutter speeds in low light situations. On a wide angle like this you wont benefit it for video purposes. If it was a long range like 70-200mm it would be different of course.

I own the Tamron 17-50 VC and after extensive use on a little Doc. I'm doing in South America, I've come to the conclusion that the Tamron 17-50 is best suited as a Stills lens and NOT a video lens.

Why??

1) The focus throw is extremely short, which makes rack focusing difficult. Manual focusing is less than ideal also because of the short focus throw.
2) The Focus ring is a bit too loose and has little resistance. Not good IMO
3) Breaths on Rack Focus. This is also not good at all.

The image is pretty good though, but yeah... weak mechanically. It just feels kind of cheap.

I think I'm going to get the Canon 17-55.

After reading many posts on this and other forums, I bought the Tamron 17-50mm with VC. Overall a nice enough lens, but I didn't like the short focus throw, so I took it back and got the Canon 17-55mm IS. Longer focus throw, with even more slop than the Tamron.

Build quality is about the same. I would have taken the Canon back and exchanged it for the Tamron, but I didn't want to look like a putz.

That is pretty funny!

The canon is very sharp for stills according to reviews so you win anyway :)

The other Tokina lenses I've tried have no slop and are good solid lenses. They feel much more quality to me than the garden variety newer Canon lenses. The focus throw
on the 11-16 works fine for me, although a lens that wide is easier to focus.

Ha! Return it and try the tokina!

The only reason I didn't consider the Tokina was the lack of IS.

I am old - Parkinson's is probably just around the corner. I sure like my Tokina 11-16mm however!

The tamron is MUCH more versatile, ideally both would be great but id def get the tamron first.

The tokina is much more of a specialty lens as the short zoom range isnt really going to be great for a lot of stuff.

The tamron is a great walk around lens that you can just keep on your camera for the majority of hte time. (i only switch it if i want a really long zoom short or a really fast DOF shot where i put the 50mm 1.4 on)
