BH claims this lens "Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel series or 50D, 40D, 30D & 20D SLR cameras" Are they full of lies? Anyone have any experience with the canon 14mm 2.8L Prime to compare? DOF, bokeh.. that kind of thing? Also, any idea on the focusing distance of this puppy?

As always, your answers will greatly effect my bank account. =)

The lens will fit any EOS SLR, but the image circle projected by the lens will only completely cover the APS-C sized sensors. This includes the Rebel series, the XXD series, and the 7D.

so, they probably just haven't updated the product description since the 7D came out.

the 14mm f/2.8 prime is a monster of a lens, but then again, it is a prime that cost WAY more than the 11-16. technically, the DOF should be identical with the 11-16 when zoomed to 14mm.

here are reviews of both lenses:

(I tried to find it where they were on the same camera, but it is very difficult because the 14L is generally a full frame lens and the 11-16 APS-C)

Will the Tokina 11-16 hold up when the footage is projected on the big screen?

I believe so. I worked a shoot where they were shooting with a Red One and they had a full set of Red Primes. and the Tokina 11-16. that is it. I think that really says something about the lens if it is up to that standard.

I am having issues picking a new lens for my 7d. I currently have the 24-70 2.8L and it is quite splendid, of course. My DP is about to get the 70-200 2.8l IS II so we have the 24-200 range covered nicely, i think. I also have a lensbaby composer with the fisheye attachment for cool fisheye stuff. What I don't have is a nice wide-angle lens. Something to fill in the sub 50mm equivilancy range. The 24-70 isn't that wide with the 7D's crop, so it acts more of a mid-shot (50-120mm ish) unless I want to get really far away to get wides....

What I really want is a nice wide-angle lens that I can use relatively close to the subject. I don't want a zoomed-out look, but instead a wide angle while still being close to my actors.

I'm not sure if I am explaining that well enough... but you all know what I mean by the difference between wide angle and far away shots...

Does anyone have some test footage with actors and subjects that used the tokina 11-16mm? I know it does pretty landscapes, but how does it work as a lens for subjects? How close can you get to them and keep focus, what kind of wide angle properties do you get when you use it on subjects that are from 2-5 feet away from the lens? That kind of thing.

Thanks!

I've got a T2i with the kit 18-135, and I'm interested in some other lenses, 50 and the tokina11-16. So let me get this straight, the 11-16 is a C sized lens which will work on the t2i with no problem. And it will work on FF(5dm2) as long as I keep it under 14mm(vingetting). I thought there would be some difference in the mount flange so the 11-16 would not physically fit a FF(5dm2)?

Flange is the same. . . EOS Camera . . . The lens does not project an image that will cover a FF sensor. Vignetting starts at around 14.5, but that means you get a true 15mm FOV on the 5D (on a 7D at it's widest, 11mm = 17.6 after the 1.6 crop factor). So I would consider it a great wide lens for both.
