Tokina 11-16 Questions

I would like to buy this lens, if I end up getting a 7D which is very likely.

I know it comes in Nikon and Canon mounts, but I'm wondering if it's a manual focus or servo. Also, which mount should I get it in? I have a GH1 right now and the kit lens Servo focus drives me nuts...I just can't get used to it.

So I'm wondering if the versions are different. Like, if the Nikon version was manuel focus, could I get it and adapt to the EOS mount?

I pretty much only do video and don't want a Servo focus if possible.

It is both manual AND servo focus. You push a ring on the forward part of the lens to switch between the two.

If you get the 7d get the Canon mount.

It is a sick ass piece of glass:

Thanks! Kind related question...how close can you get to something...and how shallow is the DOF when you're wide open and as close as possible?

Also, anyone know when this lens will be in stock for the Canon mount? I can only find the Nikon mount. Is it unusable in the Nikon mount?

Then i'd imagine u'd get a Nikon adaptor if u want to use it.

If u had the Canon mount then u wouldnt need an adaptor. But if guess if u want it now and can get the adaptor then go for it.

A Tokina 11-16 Nikon mount on a Canon 7D is NOT usable.
You will be able to physically mount it on the camera but you will have NO aperture control.

The Canon camera will not be able to communicate (electronically speaking) with the Nikon type lens.

Thanks.

So getting the Tokina 11-16 with Canon mount is what we should get with the 7D? Any links to the Cannon mount?

You should get the canon mount if you have a choice. I already owned a nikon mount version of this lens before I got my 7D.

Not entirely true.
It is usable but there is a work around to do it - I know because I use a nikon mount tokina 11-16 on my 7D in nearly every shoot.

On the back of the lens is a small groove in an arc shape along which a lever slides, if you move that lever with your finger the aperture opens and closes, the default is closed. The groove is about 2mm wide – exactly the width of the stem of a Q-Tip (cotton bud in european speak). What you do is get a Q-tip and cut each head off so you are left with just the stem, no more than 1cm long (say 1/3rd inch). Wedge it in the gap vertically, it fits perfectly and firmly and holds the lever.

I usually wedge it in over to one end so the iris is fully open at 2.8
or sometimes a couple of millimeters from the end so the iris is around f3 to f3.2
Its not ideal but it is workable and saves me buying a new lens.

Since the focal length is so short there is no dof unless you are doing a close focus barrel distortion shot (which I never do) so even if did have
aperture control I would most likely be shooting at these apertures anyway, lowering the ISO in bright conditions.
