Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 AF100 Zoom Test

The Tokina 11-16 has a rather smooth manual zoom function. Here's a test where I used the EOS lens on a Fotodiox dumb M4/3 adaptor @ f/2.8 and set exposure using .6 grad ND + AF100 ND filter wheel #3, ISO 200, 1080p.

Do tell me thats not supposed to be a useable zoom shot and the jerky movement is Vimeo streaming!

Apart from that...sharp lens.

Snp hi,

how happy are you with the Fotodiox dumb M4/3 adaptor...will this adaptor allow me to use my canon L series lense on the af 100...what are the limitations and how do you control the iris of the lense...I love the shot...looking really good...thanks for the input

Wouldn't say that I'm happy but considering Birger delays, $35 for this adaptor is a workable solution shooting wide open and using ND's for full-stop exposure changes and variable ISO for half-stop changes. Hey, even a 270 shutter will give you half-stop control.

I'm sure the jerkyness is from manually turning the zoom ring but I think the point of the shot wasn't to show a smooth zoom but rather the sharpness and shifting of the lens through the 11-16mm range.

That is what the O.P said. ...so thats why I asked.. IMHO: That zoom is rubbish.

I am sceptical about still camera zooms lenses on motion picture cameras. Buyer beware!

Danger of this camera is just like DSLR's... it encourages the un-initiated ...that motion film work is easily achieved and can be done with equipment , in-adequate to the task.

So ummm...how does one become initiated :)

In your humble opinion?
Well you do know what is said about opinions? It is like a certain part of ones body...
Everyone has one.

I guess you could say that any one who considers the test shows a "smooth manual zoom function" could now be called "initiated" ....to the ways of using still camera zoom lens for motion picture tasks.

"experience is something you get just after you need to use it"

I am sure the lens is great as a variable prime though. ( has it got manual aperture setting - f/stops?)

The Tokina does not have a manual aperture setting.

Uh Huh!

FWIW: here is the lens I chose as my compromise - short zoom. To me a variable prime.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f2.8 constant. manual aperture ring , manual focus ( AF should I choose but will never do so and no way to do so)

This lens is a fit with what and how I shoot sometimes. I will never zoom it but on occassion may use it for a short frame "push" or "pull".

When I need a better lens or something for a different reason... I will rent PL lenses .

This will do fine combined with my primes and until new gear emerges to be considered worth owning by me.

Will post up a lens test soon as I do it . (a...nd attempt a useable zoom for "kicks and giggles")
