Tokina 11-16 and strong moray pattern

Hi

I just got a Tokina 11-16. I like the wideness of it, but I do notice that it captures a LOT of Moray patterns compared to my other lenses. The 720 especially, is quite a bit worse than usual. Even at 1080, it's much more noticeable than my other lenses.

The stills portion seems to work really well, so I don't think it's a defective lens. I'm wondering if it's because of extreme wideness of the lens and the corresponding Deep DOF is what causes that.

Anyone else have this problem with this lens?

Thanks

Gene

A wide lens with deep DOF on a all of these cameras will cause moire/aliasing if the pattern is fine enough or the detail is too high, so the lens itself is perfectly fine, you just need to figure out ways to work around it.

Some people have suggested closing a lens down so that difraction filters some of the moire/aliasing artifacts from the video. But not sure how viable that will be for your specific application.

I just bought it from KEH. Brand new USA version for $650. A bit more expensive than BH, but it's so hard to find. I think they might have 1 more. They're website is terrible, so it makes it hard to find things on it, which is probably why I was able to find this lens there

I agree with the website. It is bad now. They changed it. It was so easy before.

I also got this lens and I agree, big problem, practically unusable for video. Good for photos though.

I also used the Canon wide angle and while its bad for 720p, its much better compared to the tokina in 1080p.

So I did some more tests after reading someone else post that if you leave it slightly off focus, it helps the Moray.

And sure enough, it did wonders. The image is a bit softer but not by that much and even 720p is pretty Moray free with the focus a bit off. Kind of a bummer, but not too bad

Haha. Thanks for spelling correction. I knew it was spelled wrong, but couldn't quite place it and the spell checker was of no help.

Sharpness off.

1080.

and you should be good to go, im loving the tokina. Havent shot any 720 to be honest with it however.

Definitely useable for video - I shot a single take steadicam shot with it at 16mm and the 7D the other day.

Do you think using older manual lenses would be better for video use precisely because they are a bit softer than modern computer-designed lenses?

Thanks gene. I just checked KEH and they're out too. If you find the moire too tough to deal with, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.
