Was there ever an official statement to the native ASA? I thought it was around 400?

Amazing review! 640 - 800 ISO rating? Again, amazing.

Barry, what is your take on the black balance Timur noted on? Was the camera black balanced when you shot with Leo?

The "0dB" setting is 400. You can use negative gain to get it down to 200, or positive gain to get it up to 3200, but by default it's 400.

I know guys keep talking about a magical "native" ISO, but there really isn't one. There's just what the engineers build into it, and that's all a balancing act of how much gain can they squeeze out of it while maintaining what they consider an acceptable amount of noise and a desirably wide dynamic range. They can tune the sensor to be quieter (and slower), or faster (and noisier) etc... accordingly, they seem to have settled on 400 as their compromise for a "default" setting.

barry, i gotta tell ya, you've really made me feel like a complete nincompoop tonight. I have had absolutely no success trying to follow your subtle hints and wish only I knew what you were trying to get at and secondly why you are being so subtle :(

Going to get out of the shower and get to be frustrated :P

Okay, PaPa, let me try a slightly different tactic:

What do you get when you mix an all-star crew of Stephen Mick directing, Mikko Wilson on Steadicam, Timur Civan shooting, Luis Caffesse producing, Matt Gettemeier running sound, and me exec-producing (and doing some DIT work), many of us flying in from three different states, along with McGeeDigital and Drew Ott, a 5-ton grip truck, five figures of money, some Zeiss Compact Prime lenses, and the most awesome city-set built by Disney and abandoned to rot into the ultimate ghost town old west set you've ever seen?

(well, we all know the real answer: a whole lotta bitching three days from now when we start releasing footage and/or frame grabs, likely, but let's pretend that isn't gonna happen...)

So the better answer is: well, that's the point where you use your eyes instead of your brains trying to figure it out... :D

And sorry for making you feel like a nincompoop, so here's one last hint...

Look about two inches down.

grrrrr. i saw that but wasn't able to find anything in other sections of the forum, at least not anything in detail..

alright, i guess it's not +1 for Barry after all, hehe, thanks for giving me a little nudge nudge.

as per the bitching 3 days from now, well.. let's hope that's not the case. I'm really in the mood to shoot with this thing and make the best of a new tool, not focus on it's weaknesses (if they can even be considered that for the price )

small text is fun!

Ah HA!

*points*

I'm using my eyes! And my finger!

Good luck on your shoot in West Texas. :)

Thanks!

Though, it is rude to point. Just pointing that out. :)

Wait; Barry, what are you saying?

- Mikko ... sat in an airport; on the way to the Alamo.

lol... im not the talent.... im the DP. The talent gets caviar. i have to settle for KOBE.... ;)

Also... on the blog a photo of the cam w/ the shiny new Follow focus courtesy of Wayne from Shoot35.com. I have to admit... its a great follow Focus and its one of the cheapest.

Nice! Really looking forward to see what you amazing guys can squeeze out of the can!

- btw, will you set up a satellite feed to follow the filming live?

That's a fantastic idea! Someone should shoot behind the scenes video on a 5D moire II

Ohh...would love to hear more about that. Deciding between that and the one from RedRock. Both are the same price...I do prefer the red though. :D

timur or barry, can you explain more on the black balance option. i havent heard this yet and wasnt aware it was an option on cameras. so essentially i would hold up a black card and tell the camera what is black, just as i would with a white card? thanks, everything sounds so exciting what you guys have lined up.

It would be like the black balance on the HVX wouldn't it? Internally the iris closes? yes?

I would suggest posting no stills or footage, and only, ONLY give testimonials about the experience. ... :-)

Really, all I need to know is if you guys were happy. Watching it in the Vimeo window is just a bonus.

i disagree. Those of us who are waiting for the cam and who don't react in a silly manner should not suffer because some pixel peepers and whiners don't know how to behave :P
