I was gonna pull the trigger on some Best Buy Insignia 50" plasma that costs $1100. Granted its image wasnt bad, hence why i was about to buy it, somethign said lemme take a walk to PC richards... Best Buy Had the panel i really wanted for $1599.00 too rich form my blood. I walked in to PC richards and Sons ( a NYC chain i believe) and walked over to the Plasma section to drool.... as i usually do because i couldnt afford anything for so long...

Saw my mothership TV, the Panasonic TH46PZ850U... 46" of 1080P glory.... Probably too big for my apartment... but Screw that.... Its AMAZIN.....

But heres the best part... its MSRP is 2499.... they were selling it for $987.00, new. So longstory short the little voice in my head led me to the holy grail of sales. BluRays were ment for this thing.... Baraka looks so damn beautiful it almost have me a headache. DArk Knight.... forget it.... No Country.... Deakins would want it seen this way.....

I havent left my house in 2 days..... ive exhausted my BR's and need to work tommorow.... So i should sleep..

But anyone in NYC wanting a Wicked deal on a big plasma, go to the PC richards on 86th street and 20th ave in Brooklyn, the sale is over at the end of march. Apparently noone buys plamas in brooklyn, they cant keep LCD's in stock, but plasmas are piling up, so this chain is overstocked to the gills. The sales guy said its an awkward size. the 42" crowd thinks its too big, the 50"+ crowd thinks its too small....

I win.

Congrats man! I am also waiting for the day I get an HDTV. Probably till the end of the year, when the jobs come in :D

Enjoy it :)

There is a reason why they selling them so cheap now, and it´s not the recession.

Plasmas and TFTs are dead, the new technologys are coming next year, so they want to make sure they have enough room to store and display them.

Congrats timur. And yes its strange you don't have a HDTV! LOL. And you got one hell of a deal.

When I first got mine I must have watched the destination channel on MPT for like 3 days.

All they showed was travel destinations from around the globe in HD.

And I was reading in popular science that the next tech in TV's will be out next year. But they are stupid expensive. Sony 11 inch TV will be $2500.

Enjoy it man.

Enjoy it! I'm not sure how people watch tv without their flat screen 1080i sony Bravia 40+ incher that engulfs the room? I mean, what is tv without it being TOO BIG for the room? Seriously!

Welcome to the Dark Side. I got my Plasma a few months ago and it's amazing. I feel like every new film I watch on Bluray (that I've seen many times on DVD) is like watching the film for the first time. It's like a theater experience I never had for my fav films (especially old ones). Enjoy it man.

however my eyes are seeing rainbow edges.... sigh. damn filmmaking for ruiningmy ability to enjoy anything...

yeah i remeber when we bought our plasma, 42 inch fujitsu, 5 grand, it was like 5 or so years ago so it was when this stuff just came out

OLED is great for "folding" screens, but not so great for large screen, as they are expensive to "scale up"

on the flip side, they give richer colors, and use less electricy and are super thin.

I know I've been out of the loop on OLED, but I think the last time I checked they could only make them upto 5" or there abouts, maybe things have improved vastly since then.

I got a 720p Panny 50" plasma for $899 from sears... one of the highest rated plasmas even though it's not 1080p... and I love it... the off-axis viewing angle is stupid good... you can be at a glancing angle and still see the image perfectly... no LCD gray-out... no matter how far off axis you are it's still the same image.

I know OLED is coming, but I'd have no regrets in picking up a plasma bargain. There are a lot of misconceptions about plasma... a lot of them... the actual power consumption isn't what you think, there's no "burn in" like everybody remembers from years ago... and they don't weigh as much as they used to.

I'm just sayin'... if you can get a high-end plasma for cheap I wouldn't worry too much about the coming tech... if the image blows your mind and the cost is low... who cares? The TV I got is going to rock my world for years to come.

Still have the Sony 36" NTSC TUBE. I hate TV and never watch it, only make TV so what do I care? The only HD monitor in my world is in my edit bay. If I bought one of these nice plasmas, what would that induce? Watching more TV and rotting my brain more.

Just keep the TV to satiate the kids and wife. They don't need anything that will encourage them to watch more.

Last Xmas I treated myself to a 42" Samsung LCD, 720p but fabulous, it is such an upgrade from the old 25" NTSC curved tubie I had my cable hooked to, it still blows my little mind even with standard def DVDs, LOL !

It sits at my feet in my tiny 8x10' bedroom, which makes it look really huge. Guess where I watch movies now....yep. Cheez-It crumbs in the sheets now.

Front room set is a 15" Toshiba tubie acting as a decoy. Criminally-minded neighbours don't know I have the new one, and a 6 yr old tube is not worth stealing. Gave the 25"er to an elderly neighbour with NO tv at all. She was thrilled to have it.

I guess everything is relative. If you go from a bicycle to a VW Bug suddenly you are livin' large  I love my big set which was a major splurge at the time.

Enjoy yours, Timur. It doesn't get any better than this  Jeff

They're so poo-pooing cheap....when you can get this much awesomeness for under a grand, who cares about the next best thing?

We have a 42" LCD, but now based on this thread, I'm feeling the need to go bigger. Can always move the existing set to another room. 46" might be the right size. (Insert PC Richards whistle noise here)

For the record... I don't watch that much TV... but I think it CAN be one of the best cost to benefit ratio things there is... depending on how you use it.

If you find nature interesting you should watch an episode of Planet Earth through a big HD panel... it's jaw dropping and inspirational.

My favorite channels are History, Travel, Discovery, Nat Geo, and Science... and all of these channels benefit greatly from this viewing experience. SpongeBob, while a welcome distraction (when I feel like switching off my worries for 15 minutes, didn't justify this purchase (which again, was pretty darn cheap for what it is.)

We've already watched a few movies, and I've watched a few by myself... With the right movie, and having the house to myself... it's pretty close to a zen experience. YMMV.

I'm doing that very thing right now. They've had a Planet Earth marathon on Discovery all day. The HD broadcast looks even better than the Blu-ray version. beautiful stuff.

really? you must have awesome broadcast....

if you wanna see jaw dropping watch Baraka on bluray. they mastered the 65mm film in 8K. then down converted to 2.4:1 1080p....

its the sharpest bluray ive ever seen....

Yeah, my broadcast provider is Satan a.k.a. Directv. Not sure why but the Blu-ray version has all sorts of digital noise in the low light portions of the image but the broadcast version does not. Technically, Blu-ray should be better I suppose, but it isn't. I'm guessing its a codec issue because it seems the more recent the Blu-ray the more crystal clear it is...

I'm intrigued by this Baraka you mention. I put it in my queue.

I went with an LED DLP 72" but yeah...big HD screens are super-happy funtime.

I'm finding that really well-mastered DVDs coming through the Samsung's upconverter are just about indistinguishable from Blu-Rays. I was watching the re-release of Once Upon a Time in the West and had to keep re-checking the box to confirm that it wasn't a Blu-Ray that I'd gotten by mistake...

ps have you actually watched Glory on it, yet...?
